one minute we bewail lack of privacy, but next we want our identities true for the asking.

Centralized identity repository is too far fetched as of now. Realistically what we can expect is implementation of online verification solutions by the government and companies. And I think a centralized repository has many disadvantages attached to it, to the point where the disadvantages might outweigh the advantages.
