BOINC (and before them SETI@Home) has been doing cloud computing for years, with a dedicated (and massive) user base. Why not turn to BOINC's already interested user base instead of foisting off on us yet another service?
As I read the article, before I could see your comment, I had the same thought. Perhaps they don't like BOINC because it wasn't "invented there?"
But yeah, why re-invent the wheel, and do it badly.
