You can buy a Toyota, but you can't buy a new 1995 Tercel.
Just the same way you can buy a Microsoft operating system, but you can't buy a new copy of Windows 95.

Auto manufacturers rarely 'make' parts themselves; they buy them from other companies who do manufacturer them. As long as there is a market for those parts from service shops (dealer, chain, or independent), those companies will keep making those parts. Once the demand dwindles to the point where those parts aren't making a profit for those companies, they quit making them.

Ditto software developers. As long as there is a profitable market for XP-compatible apps, they'll keep writing new apps to be backwards compatible with it. On the other hand, the market isn't there anymore for W2K compatibility, so they don't bother.

Sorry, your analogy doesn't float.
