The mistake my company makes (for the 6th time since I have been here), is that it requests time estimates from developers, then routinely overrides them. People are essentially intimidated into giving time estimates that coincide with managements schedule, rather than based on the work to be done. Then we routinely overrun - usually to the "internal" time estimate and maybe a bit more, and morale suffers.
