It is pretty stupid, but to get to minimize and maximize buttons back, you have to install a program called Advanced Settings by doing

sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool

after you do that you go to the program "Advanced Settings" and there is the option to pick which buttons you see and whether you want them on the top left corner or the top right corner. Hope this helps you out a bit.
