Magement monkeys are still clueless
Corporate managment (management monkeys) knowing nearly nothing about IT and having a primary objective of CYA is what keeps Microsoft in business. When you start to see a serious trend toward Unix and open source, then you will know they are finally catching on. Even though databased "cloud" driven apps are becoming common place, and have been for years (the marketing monkeys are just now really hyping it), the monkeys still don't know anymore now than they did 20 years ago, while the implemetation, development, securing and database management aspects has remained complex. However since these apps are server based they can be outsourced to the lowest cost place to maintian them. With a minimun of 12% bump on labor 7.x FICA xFUTA 3.x+State, x+ workmens comp, yatta, yatta, even if all IT personel would work for exactly the same wages as workers in India, it would still be cheaper to set up shop in India.

That said, a great body of work has been done over the last 20 years. Over time, what is needed, much like all the flavors of word processors, will have already been prefected to a point where serious improvement is no longer required. Hardware hit that point 6 or 7 years ago. When was that last time people were really crying about slow machines? Of course I'm not counting poorly maintained Microsoft machines running slowly due to fragmentation, driver conflicts, viruses, every spammed program in the world being downloaded by the end user, etc. as that isn't a hardware problem. Software will get there soon enough.

Many IT jobs will go the way of the TV repair man.
