Porting or Migrating Games and Applets...
I've noticed many things that went away over the years that had great capabilities and am sure they are "licensing" issues. I recently read windows 8 will not play DVD or BluRay due to codecs and licensing MS doesn't want to keep paying for.
One applet I found of great use in the past was in older MS Office Tools called "Microsoft Photo Editor" that could create great effects and textures such as stained glass and canvas, etc. It had (has) many abilities that were easy to use. I know of photo editing like Gimp and have Corel and some Adobe professional tools, but it is so complicated to "learn" how to do some simple tasks so I revert to the old photo editor (in win7) a lot of times. I'm not sure it's technically legal to have moved, but I just HAD to have it so where do I insert coins to pay for it?
There are many view and folder options with Windows 7 that I don't like and cannot revert to the ones and programs such as tweakUI just won't do what I need to do so it's a shame that we can't "pick and choose" the exact behavior, applets, games, etc. that we want on a newer OS. (yes, I've tried many classic desktop simulators, but they also cannot do what I need believe it or not) Many times just knowing the proper vocabulary to search for what you want or need to describe is very hard too! I would have never recalled this pinball if it wasn't for this article.
Someone should create a list of items that "used" to exist divided into games, functionality, etc. I wish all these things were portable and modularized to make moving them easier.
I think it's awful that such fun and easy items existed that have gone wayside and many times even paying to have that option is not an "option". Remember Battlezone, Centepede, Joust and Tempest, etc.? yes, they can work on Win7 and my kids and I have a blast with them! I bet there's some "retro" install for them, but not that I have found.
