When I launched the Help, there were some open blocks where some graphics were supposed to be. I compared the Help on my Win 7 machine to that of XP and found there were 2 graphics missing. I cracked open the pinball.chm archive and pulled out a couple of the HTM file. Reviewing the code revealed that the graphics are stored in other chm files, and there are css files that the help uses too. If you want the graphics and style sheets for your pinball help, then also grab these chm files:ntart.chmntdef.chmntshared.chm

...I discovered that the Windows 95 version of 3D Pinball for Windows - Space Cadet came with a Readme.doc file from Cinematronics that contains a very comprehensive set of instructions for playing the game. It essentially contains the same information found in the Pinball Help file (pinball.chm) but without all the frustration of the dead links. If you'd like to have a copy, post comment here and if there is enough interest, I can make it available for download.

http://www.techrepublic.com/forum/discussions/102-391822-3669740

Thanks for that Greg, I'll give it a whirl, I do miss that game! However there are a number of other games that I used wot play around with from Windows XP, and even 3.1:- Lords of Conquest, a discontinued, late 70's old XT platform game from EA- Warlords 2, 3 & 4 from UbiSoft that are fun to run, but tempermental ...be nice to have it quarantined in it's own space like a virtualised app rather than an OS.- Gods from the Bitmap Brothers- Castles II from InterplayI also use a couple of laptops for training deliver so that I have Office 2007 and 2010 available (they don't like co-existing and I'm not sure about partitioning a laptop - what do do with the recovery partition etc). So, I've tried Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 (yuk) and used Parallels 4 for Windows for a while (OK, but cranky with external displays). I looked at VMWare on the net and am intimidated by all the blurb and techie stuff - I couldn't find a simple Idiot's guide. The latest goss is that VMWare Workstation 2012 is a good and easy fix, and the new Parallels 6 for WIndows looks promising. But before I leap into this, I need to get a handle on how to run software built for old processors on new technology and how to build ISO images to turn into Virtual Machines, and maybe mixing that with partitioning and somehow saving the factory restore partition for when I ditch the machine. Oh, yes. I chop and change machines a lot, so I want portability! Um,.........help?? Please!

http://www.techrepublic.com/forum/discussions/102-391822-3669605

I've noticed many things that went away over the years that had great capabilities and am sure they are "licensing" issues. I recently read windows 8 will not play DVD or BluRay due to codecs and licensing MS doesn't want to keep paying for. One applet I found of great use in the past was in older MS Office Tools called "Microsoft Photo Editor" that could create great effects and textures such as stained glass and canvas, etc. It had (has) many abilities that were easy to use. I know of photo editing like Gimp and have Corel and some Adobe professional tools, but it is so complicated to "learn" how to do some simple tasks so I revert to the old photo editor (in win7) a lot of times. I'm not sure it's technically legal to have moved, but I just HAD to have it so where do I insert coins to pay for it?There are many view and folder options with Windows 7 that I don't like and cannot revert to the ones and programs such as tweakUI just won't do what I need to do so it's a shame that we can't "pick and choose" the exact behavior, applets, games, etc. that we want on a newer OS. (yes, I've tried many classic desktop simulators, but they also cannot do what I need believe it or not) Many times just knowing the proper vocabulary to search for what you want or need to describe is very hard too! I would have never recalled this pinball if it wasn't for this article.Someone should create a list of items that "used" to exist divided into games, functionality, etc. I wish all these things were portable and modularized to make moving them easier. I think it's awful that such fun and easy items existed that have gone wayside and many times even paying to have that option is not an "option". Remember Battlezone, Centepede, Joust and Tempest, etc.? yes, they can work on Win7 and my kids and I have a blast with them! I bet there's some "retro" install for them, but not that I have found.
