Tahoma and Calibri offer slightly more distincitive options (compared to Helvitica and Arial), but are still highly readable, sans-serif fonts. Times New Roman--and other serifed fonts--should never be used for anything.

Bolding and underlining can be very effective in highlighting key points ... draw readers eye to the areas you really want them to see. But can certainly be overused, too.
