I don't think getting video out of a phone is as difficult as the author makes out (unless you're using an iPhone), but of course better industry support, faster interfaces and clearer video are welcome to any tablet device (including phones).

My Atrix 4G has HDMI out and the cable was included in the box with the phone. I've hooked up my phone to many an HDTV to show digital versions of movies I own and video I've taken on vacation. And while it is easy to do and the results are great I admit that wiring up the phone to the TV seems, well, old-school. New technology should focus on cutting the cord for video, data transfer, and charging.
