I don't really see modern TV as being broken. Sure, the interface could use an update but I really don't see myself wanting to buy an actual TV from Apple/Microsoft. Not because I'm not an Apple fan but because there are some things that are done better by other components or that aren't available on Apple's platform so I'd still end up switching through the different components. Even with a snazzy interface, I still wouldn't be able to simply put the TV on the stand and connect "nothing" to it so in the end it makes little difference...it ends up being a monitor with an Apple TV built in, that's all, but now you've got Apple's policies in control over how you use your TV along with the other media sources and I don't think I'm on board with that. Siri? I don't feel like "yelling" at my TV.
I'm rather sick of every TV manufacture producing absolute garbage. TV's used to last 20 years, now they are lucky to last 5 years, many are DOA when you buy them, or die in a year or start having problems. And of course, the popping capacitor issue is still around.
If Apple built a TV and promised some quality without the stupid walled garden crap, I'd buy it.
