Be glad it's not your Mother.
You know Evelin on "Two And a Half Men"? Thats my Mom.
Mom knows nothing about computers, doesn't care to know anything about computers and doesn't want me anywhere near her laptop. Fine, until she starts getting letters thanking her for applying for credit cards ....
Mom doesn't like passwords so the laptop autologs into her user account .... an administrator account without password.
When the wifi quit working Mom plugged straight into the cable modem.
Mom can't be bothered with computer maintenance. Far as I cared to look she didn't even have XP SP 3 installed and this is in 2012.
I ask if she does anything other than her Yahoo mail online and she says no ... and as I'm packing up her laptop to bring it home and Clorox it she asks if her bank account will still be there ...
.... and there is one potential explanation how someone got her personal information.
I boot her laptop with 'linux' via USB and scan and yep, freevirusscan.exe is in there, forget which particular trojan it carried but it was a nasty one, of course she didn't download it, must have been someone else. Right.
Her and her boyfriend, who's even less computer literate than her, get together and convince each other that I'm just being hyperbolic and overreacting.
I installed XP Pro, set it to autolog into a normal account, installed RDP for remote administration (because she can't be trusted) and set thirty something character long administrator passwords, and got her back behind the router, and set "everything" to auto update.
I don't know how you IT people can handle this level of cluelessness on a daily basis.
