Windows 8 - Is the Metro UI really for everyone?
As an IT pro, I work between the technology and the user. For almost 30 years I've monitored the technological innovations looking for those that would be useful for the users of my small governmental agency. Some innovations work and some don't, of course, but we need to try them all. Still, I'm highly skeptical of the Metro UI Microsoft seems to be forcing on all Windows users, regardless of their needs. It seems to me that where a touch-screen interface is useful, the Metro UI will offer excellent value. On the other hand, as I observe business uses, there is limited, if any, usefulness for touch-screen, save in point-of-sale systems. Yes, the Metro UI can be customized, but there is a bit less flexibility and convenience in it versus the desktop. Almost unanimously, our people will escape the Metro UI for the desktop and try to stay there to do their work. Unfortunately, the folks at Microsoft have their own agenda, and it doesn't comport with that of many users. Bottom line: From our testing so far, we are planning to avoid Windows 8
