I checked out a site I developed using jQuery Mobile and HTML5 over at MobiReady. It failed miserably. One of the reasons was that it wasn't using XHTML-MP. They displayed a chart with penetration by markup support... that ended at 2005!? Really? I question the validity and usefulness of this site and based on this not sure why it's even recommended.
It also failed on other picky things, I used an H4 without having all of H1, H2, and H3 above it - yes probably should have the correct heading structure, and it's better syntax to do so, but on a mobile usability level it really shouldn't be given as much weight as it was given.

I'm with Scott here. I checked out a site that Google places a mobile icon next to in the mobile SERPs and MobiReady said that site wasn't mobile compatible.
It would be great if the guys here could update the article to reflect the unsuitability of that tools as I'm sure that many non-experts may view the information given as valid.

This article is one side of the coin. The other side pertains to new or redesigned websites. Use a responsive/adaptive layout so you can have a single, style agnostic website viewable on any device. There are different frameworks available to help you get started so you don't have to build it from scratch. I have used the Bootstrap from Twitter and Less Framework, but that's not to say they are always the best choice. They all serve their purpose. In no certain order here are a few of the good frameworks you can use.

While the above tools may not offer all the functionality that we would individually want to have, they offer a way to get your site onto the majority of mobile devices easily. I would also like to point out that the above tools also come with premium plans; for a good reason.
I have personally used DudaMobile and I love the ability to add a 'Click-To-Call' feature where users always have access to your phone number displayed on each page of your website while on their mobile devices.
