How well did your migration to Google Apps go? Can you offer any insights to your peers on the process?
"In my next few articles, I???ll discuss what happened next..."
that this statement means just that.

...Looks like it went very smoothly indeed!
I have migrated about a dozen organisations over the past 2 years and the only difference is that the Google Apps Admin & User Mign & Sync tools seem to have got better & better. One migration involved 54 users of an in-house Exchange 2003 server - one user turned out to have >9k Outlook folders - it took >48 hours to migrate - but did not fail;-)

It's an interesting article. I was just wondering if you considered the free google apps? It doesn't have as much space per mailbox (~10GB rather than 25GB) but for up to 10 users on a new installation (I have two domains at the old level of 50 free accounts) it should have been ok, or at least worth consideration.
Another question, did the company have any shared mailboxes on Exchange, and if so, how were these implemented on Gmail? Can they be done through permissions to one login or would someone need to log out and into a different account?

The free version is good for Basic setups not involving outlook synchronization or migrations as the Outlook Sync tool isn't available with the free version. http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=175121
The question makes an excellent point; there is a free version with less storage space available and no Outlook sync as Clint mentioned. Another concern is that the free version limits a sender to 500 outbound email messages per day (compared to 3000 for the paid product) which could be a concern given the fact this company sends out announcements and invites to several hundred users at a time. Lastly, support seems a bit faster and more direct when using a subscription-based product compared to the free alternative.
Also, for those interested in learning the ins and outs of Google Apps, the free version is a great idea.

Although you blocked out 3 instances of the actual domain name, under the line Let's verify that you own your domain, you missed one
Your powers of observation are excellent.
Truthfully however, I couldn't run the setup again using the live product so I borrowed a sample screenshot for the Google Apps Setup Wizard from here, to outline the domain verification process:
