To change back to the old Ubuntu desktop click on the 'power' button at top right then --> system settings --> (Control panel , System) Login Screen --> Select "Ubuntu Classic (no effects)".
I didn't have to change from Ubuntu to another OS, and have the original simplicity of Ubuntu as it was, and which was so appealing.
