Using a CDN has NOTHING to do with taking the easy way out (nothing, zero zilch) and everything to do with best practices, optimizing user experience and developing high performance websites that can handle thousands to millions hits a day.

Just about every high traffic website uses a CDN of some sort, I highly doubt that Facebook, Google, Yahoo and Tech Republic itself are "taking the easy way out".
