@mikes said "The whole point of business attire has been to show off who has the bigger paycheck". I think he's missed the point entirely! This is a clear statement of a materialistic interpretation and it's neurotic, not real. I think if mikes was just to drop this thinking he'd soon find the Chairman is actually very friendly.
@dossy said "only people who are threatened by the relaxation or elimination of the dress code are those who can only try to demonstrate their implied value through the quality of their wardrobe." There's all kinds of assumptions and mind reading going on here. I think you're the one acting threatened. As with mikes comment, no-one is expecting to keep their job by dressing well! Dossy, the boss is not that stupid just to be hoodwinked by a nice suit.
I know for some people wearing a suit doesn't come naturally, if it's not part of your culture; but I encourage you to look past the outward appearance. Just because your boss is wearing a suit and tie it doesn't mean he's stupid or subscribes to strange methods of evaluating performance.
For therapy, try dressing up a little. If you don't normally wear a collared shirt - buy a nice one and test it out at work! Upgrade your shoes, or your pants. Try to work yourself to the point where your colleagues don't find it completely bizzare when you start wearing a tie!
