I think it is because the Chicago area is so high with competition that employers want someone who is extremely well-versed in everything. I have little pieces of a lot and if there happens to be an employer who would give me the chance to combine that knowledge, I would totally shine. I have been given quite a few opportunities like these in my career, which has put me where I today but then the organization re-organizes and the manager who hired me is changed and the new one doesn't see it as an investment and my project or position is eliminated. I'm keeping it moving though, trying what I can. It is just really tight right now...though..based on a few job searches from this morning, it does seem to be looking better. We shall see.
