What a waste of time and money
chrisbedford 13th Jul - Below your threshold / Read Anyway
It's just another movie set. It was constructed on the cheap in a 3rd world country (at the time the movie was released, much was made of how George Lucas created the special effects on a very tight budget, and the whole movie only cost as I recall $7m to make) so why does anyone expect the sets to still be in any kind of good shape more than 30 years later?

And for goodness' sake why go to so much trouble to "preserve" it? I guess I'll never get the whole nerdy fascination - no, *obsession* - with dressing as characters from any fictional genre and attending conventions to get autographs from the actors... please. Get a life.

I guess someone wasn't loved when they were a kid so now they feel the need to destroy everything around them. You say get a life, I say get a psychiatrist and let go the anger.
I just said don't waste effort preserving something that is of no consequence.

It's frequently those who try to make themselves superior by tearing down how other people are directing their time and energy who need to "get a life". Tell us Chris, what exactly have you done with your life recently? I'm sure we would all be fascinated.

I said I don't get it, and I don't.

What have my recent achievements to do with it? At least I don't make an issue of what I do. And I sure as $#!t can think of any number of things I'd rather do with my time and money than spend it renovating a temporary structure in the Sahara, a thousand miles from anywhere fun. Which is what makes me think those who couldn't, don't have a life. Maybe that makes me sound judgmental, but who cares - ever listened to the nerd conversations at comic con?

Tunisia is not exactly the richest country in the world. A 'Star Wars' trek to the movie location would be a small but useful draw to get folks into the country. I'd hate to see it get like the pyramids with all the surrounding commercialism, but hey, what a bit of fun. Perhaps this will get the ball rolling.
I see nothing wrong with the active fan community that has built up around the Star Wars movies. I love the original trilogy myself. If I had the time, I think it would be a blast to participate in something like the 501st Legion, which is a great organization that spends a lot of time helping others in addition to having a great time in costume together. But it seems a little overboard worrying about the thrown-together sets that were never intended to be anything but temporary. In fact, I wonder why the production company was allowed to leave them abandoned and not required to clean up the place and leave it like they found it. Sure the Cantina was an actual building that was there long before the movie crew came and went, but a plaster igloo out in the desert seems like more of a distraction from the natruarl beauty of the desert than an object of pilgrimage.
The Star Wars fan in me thinks its cool to see these old locations (especially the hotel) but the human thinks there must be more charitable ways to spend $10,000. That could help a lot of people. Still, as they said, some local contractors got a job out of it so good for them.

I love the Star Wars movies, love going to Comic conventions but its a movie prop. No one wants to or will visit Tunisia in unholy hell heat to see it. Besides this, what is there else to do in the lovely Tunisia? Anyone? Nothing but melting to death. Yeah bring the family for the fun! Listen I love all things geek but this is absurd to believe this is worth saving, but to each their own, just not me.
Only you said it more eloquently.

The way that you said it.

Here they are spending their own Money or at least money that they raised to do this with so the people who donated wanted to spend their money on things like this. The fact that it gave some contractors work for a few days is a small side benefit.

However if it was the Government Spending Tax Payers Money your complaint would have been fine. It gets a lot more difficult when someone wants to set themselves up and tell others how they should behave and what they should spend their money on.

Personally I wouldn't be involved in contributing to things like this but by the same token I would never deride anyone who wanted to do something like this either. wink

That is all I was saying. People spend THOUSANDS of dollars upgrading and updating their cars, boats, trucks, garages and to me THAT is a waste of money. But I am not going to out of my way to tell them "Hey your wasting your money doing that." It is thier money and they can do want they want with it. If you dont like it just close the browser and forget you saw it. Thier is no reason for you to say anything about how someone spends thier own money.

It makes me feel superior.
I almost choked on my cookie crumbs. Your 5 words hit me just as I was wondering what would follow "Yes there is - ".

Thanks !

Personally I am for anything that even resembles space exploration being kept in the public eye! We are missing something by not continuing space exploration...

I have been there , to Matmata and the hotel etc.

Its all quite disapointing for a Star wars fan , they left nothing behind when they finished filming , the huts and buildings are people homes/businesses so were there anyway.

The locals all wear heavy brown cloth cloaks to keep cool in the sun , they often have their hoods up - I realised that Lucas must have liked this and decided to use them for the Jawa.

A very interesting country to visit , really glad I went , I actually stumbled across Matmata whilst on a safari, but I wouldnt go there specifically for Star wars stuff.
