I am not sure if that's the only problem.
The biggest problem is that there are a million GUIs and all of them are not polished. Even Ubuntu's latest attempt is just crap. So there is no single good standard just mass confusion.
The other day I sat down wanting to give Linux desktop one more chance. I setup a Virtualbox and could install these things within minutes mus'tve installed 10 different versions. I am both a Mac user and Windows user. Not one of the desktops was even close in usability. Everything is disorganized. I installed some apps. I couldn't even find them. There is no Applications or Program Files folder. Frustrating for an end user.
I wish someone would just make a GUI that looks like XP or the Mac OS X. If any of the GUIs were like this, I wouldn't hesitate rec'd to customers. Email is mostly web based these days. Accounting we can run Wine. Backups? Ever hear of rsync? Linux has the best backups in the world. Too easy to put a front end.
