No true "nerd" would ever choose to limit the information available to another person, which pretty much removes the foundation from your "blame the nerds" theory.

People are a product of their culture and education. Our American culture is obsessed with money and profit. The arts have been removed from our education system by those who care more about money than mankind, so today's (and yesterday's) children are not exposed to art, music, and literature outside the currently popular.
