It seems Microsoft is on the way where everybody's expectation is...
The same aim in reverse was from PC to tablets, and that was the atom cpu netbooks. But they were not actually notebooks, nor tablets. So it didn't go so well, except the price was affordable and sold like hell for some time. Now it's time to do the right thing: A tablet that can perform like a PC. Many of us aren't comfortable with the limitation of tablets, tablets are still toys to surf the net and play things only. But they're comfortable in a way. Long battery life, ease of use and enhanced screens for games & video. Try to accomplish some tasks in Excel & Word ( Numbers & Pages ), they fail unless you are not so serious about it.
The perfect solution is a tablet that has the performance of a high end notebook with a reasonable price, that's what all of us are looking for. And I'm sure many will pay twice the price of a tablet to get one.
Will it be Microsoft or Apple to succeed, that's another question though.
Microsoft is always a software company having a few gadgets, but the prime idea is to sell the software. Though Apple, in my opinion has always found a better balance between hardware & software.
I've been using a notebook since 1993, and that's a lot of years, almost 20. So I have habits. I need a real keyboard for Christ's sake ! Or at least a screen that's easy to use for serious tasks The new generation though is not so sure on what they really want ! They beg for things that seem impossible for now ( e.g. a real 3D screen with no glasses ).
Conclusion: Personally, I would like the best that seems possible for now: A high resolution touch screen ( 1980 x 1020 for now ), a high speed and efficient cpu, a real keyboard, and a storage sufficient for my needs all wrapped in a dependable, fast operating system that doesn't crash so often. Whoever does it, I'm ready to pay twice the price of a tablet sold today...
