You cannot open a pdf document from within LibreOffice Draw in debian linux!!

You must right click on the pdf file icon and select LibreOffice Draw in order to open it as a pdf file. LibreOffice Draw will not be in the default list for opening pdf files, so you will have to selcet 'other' and select LibreOffice Draw from among the options listed.
