AcitveSync is for mobile devices only and is not supported in Outlook. Never understood why. Both Gmail and Hotmail support ActiveSync to sync with various mobile email clients, but you have to us an Outlook addon to get proper outlook sync to Outlook (Gmail's outlook sync tool/Hotmail conncector). IMAP and POP3 can used without an addon but they have limited functionality.
I am hoping Outlook.com will connect to Outlook using MAPI like an exchange server.
