Had plenty of hot fixes from Redmond do great and terrible things to their own OS, services and client software (I'm looking at you Office/Exchange/IIS)!

I would proffer the following -

2a - the fewer services you lay on any OS the more stable it is.
No matter what anti-virus one uses, it certainly is just a matter of time before their machine becomes infected (item #3). Without a proper backup (item #5), your data is quite possibly lost for good. Seems that most folks (and businesses) feel that the right approach is to gamble with their data. The "so far, so good" approach. With the recent news of many companies having been hacked and their data compromised such as Linkedin, and that gaming company, Blizzard, for example, I'd think people would sit up and take notice. Maybe.

What percentage of Linux machines would you say are infected? :-D

I run Kubuntu on my work laptop (my business reason is that I need Eclipse, which is happiest in Linux). I run ten different Linux devices at home.

All squeaky-clean, and not just because Linux is a better OS. Social engineering is still a risk, but I've received IT security training, and have passed the good advice on to my wife, who is careful and aware.

The install base for Linux is so small that it is not a prime target plus there probably aren't any reliable numbers since most linux users don't install anti-virus software. So, unless something breaks a linux user wouldn't know they are even infected.

I guess you must be one of those perpetratiors, or you're simply one of those reicked into believing that long trotted-out piece of FUD. Linux is secure because it's *designed* to be secure, while MSWindows is hackable because it's designed to be hackable.

I like Linux and use it quite a bit, and have done so since the earliest versions of Slackware and Red Hat. Since it's source code is public domain, it is actually les "secure" to a hacker than MS Windows "by design", however there are many very resourceful and well funded groups (mostly foriegn) who are constantly attacking the Windows platform--because that's where most of the most valuable and marketable data can be accessed .

The vast majority of recent exploits in both Windows and Linux have all been the result of insecurities in third-party applications. The difference between Windows and Linux is that the exploits quite often compromise Windows itself, allowing privilege escalation and potential major damage, whereas Linux more often limits damage to the current user's profile and privilege level.

Okay, maybe it is the OS...

Besides, this article is probably discussing businesses. I know of no business who has been free of malware. Some have very low occurrences, and most of those are innocuous, while others have quite high rates of infection. Those w/ little problems in this regard have the same things in common: Discipline (as in don't surf porn, or download illegally), no admin rights locally, and web content/malware filters in use.

There are 6 PCs in that timeframe, and none of them have been infected with anything. I have run scans at times to check, and they have been clean.

It's all about how you use the PC.

I remember doing a reinstall of windows and my PC was infected the moment I plugged in the network to install updates.

I've never had to re-install Windows on these PCs. If you look after it, it will run happily for years. Longest one was 7 years. It still booted in less than 30 seconds.

No matter how carefully you plan and how diligently you backup your system, the backup will NOT load!!!
But the time to learn that is when you test your backups BEFORE they are needed.
under VITA they did an audit of agencies. Unfortunately they asked the question "Are you performing backups routinely?" and left it at that. The obvious followup question should have been "Do you routinely restore/test your backups?" happy

I've seen plenty of "good" backups fail to restore. If you have a business, you should be doing a business continuity test annually. We just had a customer loose an Exchange VM and the restore wasn't pretty, I'm glad someone else worked on that one.

Systems don't change as frequently, and often those changes are easier to restore. It's easy to make an image of a system disk or build a new virtual machine from a template, then apply subsequent service packs and patches. At least, easier than recovering lost user data without a backup.

I'm still waiting for my desktop to be hacked and/or infected. So far, so good, and it's running Windows!!! Please, stop digging at MS every time you post something unrelated - we all know, you hate MS and you hate Windows and you love Linux. That's OK, but your anti-MS stance needs to ease up a little.

It's not bias, it's fact. I've been an IT pro for >15 years and I haven't seen an Internet-connected PC yet that has gone 5 years without getting infected by something. Microsoft's security has improved drastically from Windows 95, but the sheer volume of the market and the speed at which those with nefarious designs can find vulnerabilities (and the slowness with which most companies react) means that there are always going to be threats you are not prepared for. Instead of being a reactionary fan-boy, accept this reality and plan accordingly.

And by-the-way, neither Linux nor Apple are invulnerable either. In the case of Linux, they just have typically have a higher percentage of security-conscious/trained users and administrators.
Linux users tend to be more technical, but Linux really doesn't have an install base so infection numbers are eschewed in my opinion. As for apple, it seems the more popular Mac's are becoming the more vulnerabilities are being found in Mac's which is leading to more infections. Apple also has been slow to respond to some fairly critical bugs which as a windows guy I find kind of funny.

It doesn't have much of an installation base on desktops / laptops / client systems. It's on at least as many back-end servers as Windows, and likely more. Servers also make tastier targets than clients.
Microsoft is the reason that sysadmins no longer have a "Wizard" status in the IT world anymore. They have created more paper sysadmins in the last 15 years that I can slap with an appropriate length of CAT5e cable.

I have multiple MCSE's, CCNA/CCDA, and other letters after my name. Pooh-pooh as you like, I run a Public Safety network with 15 or so varied and complex systems, and I've worked on major upgrades for the US Navy and large organizations. These are all top dollar positions, and they ALL specified certifications, especially MS, in their job postings - as do most of the better job opportunities out there today. Earning "paper" can be an empty achievement; it can also teach a person how to dig in, focus, troubleshoot, and research. By the way, a lot of that "edification" stuck - and I've solved some obscure and esoteric problems using what and how I learned. The article is right - keep learning, if you want to stay fluent, flexible, and marketable. I'm prepping to test out, yet again.... only hitch is, I think my brain is almost full...! happy

are no use, but the training and learning when done properly are good, I only have a win 7 cert so have limited experience, I would get more but the time and cost compared to the short life cycle they have is a bit daunting and putting me off getting any more.
11. Companies rarely if ever spend enough time and money to properly QA their product. That is why more often than not their is a 'patch' shortly after release. They depend on the users to 'test' the software and report back the bugs - free labor.

12. Support agents rarely get trained properly or in time to support a product. The companies rely on you, the user, to work with them to provide 'on the job' training as they resolve your issues. That is why often times an agent acts 'stupid' about a product.

13. Companies don't really want to provide support. The regard it as an expense on their balance sheet. That is why they set up 'user forums'. Its call the 'Big Boy' warranty - "your a big boy now; fix it yourself."

14. Often times companies come out with a new version, mostly bug fixes, with a few interface changes, or a couple of 'new' features that should have been included in the first place. Why? To get the customers to pay for the bug fixes.

15. Many companies don't really care if their product works or not just as long as you buy it and they don't get bad publicity or reputation for releasing garbage. If this was not the case why the disclaimers in the license agreements that the product is sold as is; you use it at your own risk; and they are not responsible if any bad happens because you use the product.

16. Some companies rush product out the door when it is not ready for release just to get it out before a competitor does or to improve cash flow.

17. Many companies do not insist that their programmers document their code. So when the programmer leaves the company the staff that is left finds it very difficult if not impossible to fix actual bugs within the code. Instead the write a series of patches to 'fix' the bugs after they occur to make the results look right, since they can't actually fix the problem in the 'core' of the program. One of the reasons programmers do this is to try to make themselves irreplaceable. It doesn't work. Another reason is that companies do not give their programmers enough time to do it. Documentation takes time and time is money.

18. No program is perfect. All programs have bugs.

19. Tier 1 support agents many times work from scripts. They listen to what you say, type key words into a database, and read back to you the results. If you think they have no idea what you are talking about you are correct.

20. They reason for long waits for tech support, other than it costs the company money to hire an adequate number of people, is that if you reach an agent to discuss and fix a problem, most if not all the profit from your purchase is lost. They want you to get tired of waiting and hang up.

I started doing programming and tech support in 1974 and I personally have experienced all of the above as an employee of many major companies.

re: item 17... I've found that most of the time it's due to the reason you stated last... That companies do not give programmers enough time to document properly. Rarely do programmers do this to look 'irreplaceable'. This is especially true when you have a team working on one project.

I've been in IT for 35 years and although I can't say I don't have the odd grey hair, the vast majority is still a youthful brown, although the quantity of hair has decreased significantly over the years! Oh I forgot to mention that I've never dyed my hair except once for a party when I dyed it green!

It is not MS hatred, it is a fact. Windows is not designed for security, period. Look at UAC - the system just cannot figure out who or what pressed a button. Try to turn on the Windows 7 firewall. I mean turn it on in real and not marketing terms, rejecting outgoing connections, and see for yourself if Windows can be both secure a usable.

Win32 cannot be secure even in theory and Microsoft finally accepted that. WinRT can be as secure as Linux, theoretically. Being secure means that when compromised the damage is limited.

Windows is a very secure environment. The big difference is that under Unix/Linux you setup user accounts and restrictions and then leave root-account alone. Windows gives you a machine with root-account and everyone behinds the system is administrator because majority doesnt serve out user-accounts and restrictions.

It can't? That's news to me.
But only if you have upgraded it from the default version included with your version of Windows. If, for example, you uninstall IE8 from Win XP, you will be faced with IE7 when you reboot.

Once you reach the version of IE included with your version of Windows, you will find you cannot uninstall it, you can only disable it.
You can remove the icons and shortcuts, but it's still there and enabled. If you type 'IEXPLORE.EXE' at a command prompt or Run box, it will pop right up. You're stuck with a 'hot' installation of the base version that came with the OS.

No. 2,3 and 6 are not true.
I've been a solution architect and enterprise architect for various companies for over 14 years.
2 - I have seen a number of unstable MS only Windows systems, and a very large number of highly stable Windows machines with all kinds of 3rd party software. I have also seen a lot of unstable Linux machines (albeit usually running Oracle).
3 - I doubt even 5% of our Windows fleets have ever been compromised. We have rigorous testing, vulnerability scanning and security processes in place and would certainly detect just about any threat that hit us in short order.
6. We are already running 'desktops on the cloud' today on a variety of platforms, from tablets to smartphones to laptops

Early on I had a tendency to just install and uninstall willy-nilly. It wasn't until I ran into problems that I learned to manually clean up after an uninstall, make sure all the unnecessary files are deleted, to check for the latest drivers (even for software), and yes, even occasionally to clean the registry. Also make sure new programs don't automatically load on startup. (Unless you really want them to run at startup -- but do you really need photoshop to run at startup so that _if_ you want to edit a photo it will pop up in an instant instead of taking a minute to load? So you're willing to wait an extra minute for startup every time you boot up? What about all the other programs on your computer? Do you need them all running in the background, eating up all that memory [however much it is]?)

That's the real reason Windows is unstable (oftentimes): people who don't know what they're doing install stuff that "helps" them by doing things automatically, and it all piles on. (There's a mathematical theorem that if you put strings in a drawer, they will knot themselves [well, that's not the mathematical wording, but the translation into everyday words -- and proof that knot theory is useful: it's not just bad luck that those spare shoelaces tied themselves together but _logical inevitability_]. Similarly, if you just put complicated programs together, they will mess the computer up (note: not proven, just asserted -- computer programs are not exactly the same as shoelaces). They have to be managed.
With all due respect to symowallo (& I didn't read the whole comment), it would take a person far more risk averse than anyone I know to regularly use Windows, and have never had any virus etc! As far as I know my regular virus scanning has always found them, but, I get them! (I also use Linux a lot, and have never had a compromise on those machines, that I know of.)
This is a great tem listing. I have to add one thing about security issues though. I have been involved in the IT industry for a long time, I even remember punch cards (the food old days). Over the years I have become tougher on the security issue in relation to performance. Seriously, I am the biggest fan of Webroot's Secure Anywhere Complete. It's fast, efficient, self updating, and no BS. My real security issue is this view. In the Netherlands where I live, datacenters have sprung up like weeds. They are overpriced, and the only winner is the stake holders who own them. Because the employees work like slave drones, sometimes they wake up and get curious about the data they are dealing with. I have seen so many successful penetrations from outside sources that it is just a joke. Linux is great, Windows is my preference. Security wise, Staff that are hot shot staff should learn to shut up. When they are working, on a VPN, and the corporate headquarters is monitoring their activities, nothing is secure. I watched tickets generated for drives to be replaced. The drives are not wiped or destroyed, but scrapped into a backpack . In some cases, I have personally seen IT people showing off their findings in a coffee shop or local bar to their buddies for a laugh. Business rated or XXX-rated, companies need to protect their assets by limiting who has access to their info. Watching a server being back doored and then being told that Open Source OS's are secure at the same time is a shame. All datacenters are hack able, and thanks to their staff using social media, there are more ways in than anyone would a\ever realize. Corporate systems need to be isolated from reachable networks. Just remember that if a movie or software can be leaked out before the actual release date, so can your clients and corporate data. When one person gets a hold of such data, their whole facility is responsible and that includes the upper management who should all be black balled from the industry forever. their next job should be at a burger stand saying "Would you like to Super Size that?".

Biggest problem I've had with RAID was, when the drives finally crashed, we couldn't buy a compatible SCSI RAID controller and all the data was lost anyway - so much for 'standards'.

As to 'understanding stuff' I'm not sure that's so true any more. A lot of 'bleeding edge' developments today are simply modern implementations of fairly old paradigms. Not much changes really except performance, price and capacity. Let's face it, the cloud is just a mainframe for the 21st century. Web browsers are the contemporary equivalent of an IBM 3270 'intelligent' terminal with, obviously, a lot more bells and whistles.

Sure, the mechanisms change; languages and protocols pop up every week but, fundamentally, these are just interpretations of pretty much the same thing. Certainly from a design & development perspective.

I think it's arguable that IT shares a lot in common (politically and commercially) with the fashion industry. Styles seem to be cyclic; allegedly 'new' systems are just rehashes of earlier designs and the market is driven by idiot pundits who bury good ideas while promoting second rate systems according to their personal opinions and biases.
from a failure. If you need that level of failover, buy a system that sports redundant RAID controllers. None of the systems I've seen allow you to swap out a RAID controller after failure and get anything back.

I think that was the point he was making. RAID is nowhere near the level of "standard" that it pretends to be. Yes, it is a standard in the sense that it defines a methodology, but when IBM and others promote as a way to protect your data and keep you running, that's pretty much a lie.
on a Compaq ML350 server a few years ago. I replaced the RAID controller and it came right back up with no additional actions. It ran slower for a couple of days while it inspected all the 1s and 0s, but it wasn't catastrophic.
from my own experience I have had no problems with this either, via HP Proliant servers. Certainly, one must replace with an identical controller to expect recovery.
I have seen all of these in my experiences as well.
Working as part of the IT industry for 30-odd years I would add that it's almost unique in that huge amounts of learning and knowledge goes down the tubes every few years and you are constantly having to re-learn and re-skill in order to keep pace with the constantly changing environment. Drop out for a couple of years and you will fall rapidly behind. What other industry changes so fast, I've tossed out more manuals and software over the years that would fill several rooms.

Heck, most software, and even hardware sold for the last 5+ years doesn't even come with a manual, just a link to a website, or if your really lucky, the "manual" is embedded in the software or comes on CD.
If jtech has been in the field nearly 30 years, he's probably tossing manuals for products that were in use before the Internet was a glimmer in Al Gore's eye.

The *real* problem is that there is a 'division of labor' aspect to IT which states that your previous experience is worthless unless it meets an arbitrary list of skills, tools, and domain experience that differs from one job post to another.

The other problem, equally as important, is that the pay level these days is uniform whether you are an Oracle developer, BA, QA Analyst, or .NET developer with the average salary being between 75-100k. At some shops, you are sweating your behind off putting in 50+ hour weeks, while at other places you are on cruise control putting in your 40 hours, while looking busy. This is a lot more common than people think.

In Europe at least, I can tell things are different.

1. Not true. Decent companies do exist.
2. Not true. Plain nonsense.
3. Not true. We have been in business since 1993 and no machine has been brougt down because of malware.
4. True. But what's the point? Most IT-people don't need to know about RAID. Problem is that some of those that don't know feel tempted to install RAIDs anyway. Call in experts.
5. Not true. For private people perhaps, but not businesses.
6. Not true. Or rather: Who knows?
7. Not true. The true problem of Linux is that it is a total mess for anyone else than those who has been raised with Linux.
8. True. But that is by definition and not specific for IT. The trendsetters are exactly that because the rest are not. If no one would take the lead, nothing would move.
9. Not true. If you and the management are able to plan and control, no more mess or stress exist than in any other area.
10. Not true. You can very well be a fine specialist in some stable area without knowing about any new trend.

Conclusion: No bumpy ride here, sorry, just some coloured chit-chat you can forget.

Am in general agreement with Jack's list, plus at least one other. Sadly to say, after 42 (yikes!) years in the technology/computing sector, as I have, many have also found out that a great many clients, OEM's and suppliers are confounding and bare-faced liars and frauds. That said, the remaining group is actually a blessing for the majority part, even though there's usually never a dull moment, indeed.

That goes for your company as well. Tell them it will take six months to deliver a new piece of software and two months later they are pissed because it isn't done. I have had this happen more than once.

I have to disagree with this one, Microsoft updates have hosed many stable machines, and cause innumerable problems over the years. Similarly, I have seen third party apps actually run without mucking up stability. Bottom line if it is stability you are after, Microsoft doesn't offer the best solutions.

While I tend to agree with the premise, and that is certainly the correct attitude in more than 20 years of supporting dozens of servers and hundreds of desktops I have had exactly 2 workstations infected (both from CD) and they caused minimal harm, a simple reboot was enough. Granted I run super tight security and it makes my job harder, and some of my clients don't care for it, but security is job #1.

I certainly agree most people don't understand RAID. RAID is NOT a backup strategy, and it does have varying levels of redundancy. Another important part of RAID is transfer rates. More spindles, more cache... mean faster access to data, which is an important function of RAID.

This is very true, you need to check if your backups complete daily, do a partial restore at least monthly and make sure the entire backup is recoverable at least quarterly. You also need to do more than keep your backup medium next to your server. If you don't, you don't have a backup solution.

True, for the majority of IT, but there are sectors where this is not true. Lawyers, Salesman and certain others need the flexibility of the Cloud, but it should be a tool in the box not a strategy (which seems to be what a lot of companies are pushing these days).

This is very true, Microsoft does a lot to perpetuate and even add to that FUD. However, on the server side Linux has made significant inroads. The desktops does still have issues in a lot of markets, mostly due to proprietary software that will not run on the linux platform.

Very true, most businesses can't afford to upgrade every two or even every three years. If your not in IT, you find it hard to justify spending money even after 6 years, one of my current clients can not believe I am asking them to spend money when they have tripled in size, their data storage needs have increased more than ten fold and they want all the new 'toys'. I guess that is what happens when you pull too many rabbits out of the hat.

Well I have certainly added gray hair over the last 20+ years, but I suspect it has little to do with IT and more to do with age. However, I.T. IS very stressful and has taken it's toll on me in many other ways, but I am an always on call 24/7/365 guy. If you are a programmer or just an 8x5 kind of guy IT does not have to be stressful (at least not more so than any other job).

"10: The second you think you understand something, you dont"
While it is true IT is ever changing, if you put forth the effort you can at least keep pace with it, and with a lot of effort and a little luck you can even ride the wave for a long time, though it is certainly not an easy thing to do.
IT is a double edged sword. Innovation and resistance to change. There is much to learn and gain from both. Given your list I'd say your experience is rather limited and practically an outsider point of view. Just my opinion after 34 years of IT and counting. Take the top Item on your list that you think changing would be of benefit, define it , make it yours, show the rest of us how to make IT better. With every issue you raise provide a solution otherwise its just politics and chit chat.

2: My Windows nearly doesn't have M$ software besides Windows itself and security essentials. Development tools, office, defragmenter, download manager, text editors, etc. all are from 3rd party world. Mostly open source, at least freewares. And I nearly never have BSOD or any other stability issues, compared to the one at my office having lots and very depending on M$ softwares (3 BSOD in 1 month, easily hangs, great record). M$ softwares tend to be bloatware eating lots of RAM and CPU cycles, bonus: starts sssssllllooowwwly. Sorry, my experience told me 180 degrees different things than yours.

If you really want the most stable Windows platform you can get, install only software from Microsoft.

If you want the most stable Windows platform, you need to install the latest versions of Windows software. Office 2003 had the last usable interface, but you'll really have to upgrade to the latest version of Office for the most stability on Windows 7. And there goes your productivity, as you now own the ribbon, which proves that Microsoft UI design is performed by drunken monkeys.

Admittedly it threw me (as any significant UI change between one version of a product and the next would) - but after a few years of regular use, it doesn't really bother me anymore.

In 30 or so in IT I have learned only one thing, the following two:

1. If you wish to have peace of mind, fix people not computers
2. If you want to make money, fix computers and leave people alone

decide! the rest is whining.
I cannot remember how many times things have gone wrong and though matter what the problem was it is always the fault of the IT department! I have developed the attitude of apologizing for the laptop not being ready (even though shipping did not place the order in time) and just letting it go. Yes, it was IT's fault, now lets get on with whatever.

I've found that things can get done quickly if:
1) You don't care who gets "credit"
2) The boss doesn't care about "blame", only on getting it fixed.
Your job is well done when nobody notices your work. And nobody congratulates you for that too.
I object to both 2 & 3.

Concerning 2, I first have to say in the interest of full disclosure that I produce third party software myself, so maybe I'm taking it a little personal. However, even if I wasn't in the software business, I would not agree that one should only install Microsoft products. In fact, I find many of Microsoft products to be much more buggy than good, solid third party products. The generalization here is just much too sweeping. All it takes is one bad software product with memory leaks to cripple your system. So then you go and make a broad generalization that all software other than Microsoft will ruin your system? That's crazy. I think you say that only because you know that Microsoft made the operating system, so you assume that their developers know enough of what is going on to make the best product to work on that operating system. If you did not know that Microsoft made Windows, you would never make such a statement.

Concerning 3, I have run systems for over a decade on Windows and have never had to clean any malware off of them. Yes, I even still have a Windows 98 computer with no malware. I often have to clean other people's computers, but not mine. One computer I ran for many years without any kind of Anti-virus software at all, other than the router that protected my network. No malware ever. Now I have seen enough on other computers that I do run anti-virus software here, but to make the sweeping generalization that every Windows computer will get compromised at some point is ludicrous.

One thing that I have learned over the years in IT is that for every person in IT who knows what he is doing, there are at least 20 who talk a good game but have little clue of the technology they work on.
And they have managements ear. I had one "web designer" give me a "design" in MS Word. And that was the CEO's go to person.

I know of (but don't know personally) one web designer who designed (well, all right, wrote) all his pages in notepad. At least through HTML 4 (after that I lost track of him).

So I'm guessing that your complaint is that the "design" was a barely understandable (if even that) outline. (If it was a real design, the invisible characters that Word stores in the document would create havoc if you just stored it as htm and tried to read it in a browser. If you don't believe me, you can try it yourself. All right, not real havoc [I've done that too, but not with html].)
1) All hardware will eventually fail. And all software will eventually work!

2) People think RAID = encryption. It doesn't! Losing 1 drive from a RAID set will still expose you and your company to a data breach. You may not be able to read a who file from 1 drive but every block is still intact.

3) Similar to Microsoft and 3rd party software, many hardware vendors will ask you to remove any non-OEM hardware before they'll work on your problem. Sometimes I think they do this to stall for more time while they research a problem and it keeps their response time SLA low!
I've had many an occasion where MS-Office is the culprit causing the issues on a desktop...so you will have to add Microsoft itself as a third party. The OS and the applications at Microsoft are created and maintained separately from each other which leads to the saying "the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing".

When trying to resolve a problem, how many times have you asked a user "did you click on/download anything?" Only to hear the usual "No I didn't touch anything."
Then spend time troubleshooting something only to find out the problem was caused by the user downloading/installing/changing something. Only after some additional and sly interrogation do I find out from the user "well I just installed this..." or "actually I clicked on..." or "..the box said do you want to.....and I clicked...". User's don't always want to admit they did something so I've found I've had to change my "interrogation" tactics. Perhaps working in IT is a good prep for a career in interrogation. happy

Nice article reminding me of how did I get here... I have the T-Shirts and gray hair to show my 20+ years in the industry. Thick skinned is an understatement.. Kevlar is more like it and now with the industry taking a bold stand in hiring practices you will need it... happy Thanks for relating accurately what IT is about after a long, arduous career. Looking back, I should have stayed on the farm.

Dealing with ignorant clueless users, ___ bosses (you fill in ANYTHING you like in the blank), politics, low pay and a skin not as thick as it needs to be, I've increasing spent time fondly thinking back. I remember the fresh air and sun working in the fields cutting hay, on the tractor picking corn, on and on. Those times weren't all peaches and cream, I'm not saying they were by any stretch of the imagination. At the same time, should I win the lottery, or at least enough to retire, screw this dog-eat-dog rat race. I'm going back to the farm and enjoy computers as a hobby. Something I've lost in past 15 years being a system & networking administrator.

The company that hired you, who offered you three weeks vacation, personal days, training and development opportunities? The one where "Work-Life Balance" is their number one priority?

BTW: if a company advertises its Work-Life Balance, internally or externally, it is because there is no work-life balance in evidence within the company. Why advertise a solution to a problem you don't have?

Does the company look the same after working 80 hour weeks with half days on weekends, emergency phone calls during family events and where training means the intern that was hired last week will write up the training priorities and budget, which will never get approved?

When exactly did it become compulsory to bring a company laptop on vacation? That's not a vacation, that's working remotely.

IT purchasing decisions will not be made on technical merits, they will be based on the personal relationships between the person with budget and the sales person. Suitability to task, ROI, TCO are post-purchase justifications. They are not germane to the purchasing decision.
You may not be able to read your own backup tapes, but unless you take steps to properly dispose them, the person who buys them used WILL be able read them.
When asked why my job in IT Management is stressfull, I reply; "Because technology rarely works the way the salesman said it would".
I've been an IT pro for 26 years now. I have survived some of the most heated advances in technologies and in company thinking. The lessons you list above are spot on to the things I've encountered. Additionally I feel others might also benefit from knowing these other tidbits:

11.) Regardless of a companies IT mantra, they are governed by their accounting departments. Every company wants to utilize technology to its fullest potential, and many plan on doing so with some even doing it in writing. However it only takes 6 months to a year of inactivity, set backs or what have you, and an accounting department will rip that mantra to shreds.

12.) VIP's love their toys, and often enjoy seeing their IT departments scramble to accommodate them even at the expense of a secure networking environment. Learn to say no and when it is appropriate to do so. I think that statement speaks for itself.

13.) More often than not, a CEO (who usually answers to a CFO) has little to no understanding of how a network works, let alone what it takes to make it happen correctly. Again, this statement speaks for itself.

14.) Companies would rather hire younger, fresh-out-of-college kids than experienced IT professionals because they believe the 'younger generation' has some sort of 'IT understanding' that older people do not. This may take a bit of explaining, however it comes from personal experience. I have been out of the IT field now for 2 1/2 years, but not by choice. I have been constantly trying to get work, and constantly told I am 'over qualified' or 'one of our most excellent candidates', only to be told they filled the position with someone else. Upon further inquiry (under the pretense of wanting to improve my interviewing skills, etc) I have learned that in EVERY case, a younger more inexperienced person has been hired. Excuses have ranged from 'That candidate was fresh out of college, and we didn't have to guess at what they've been doing' to 'We're afraid this position won't be fulfilling enough for you, given your range of experience'. However the common link has, in every case, been a younger candidate. I can only attribute this to a stigma or perception that the younger candidates appear more 'geeky' than I (coupled with a fear that I may either take their position or want too much money). Staying in touch with the industry does little to further your goal.

15.) Some things never change, even in IT. For those that have 'been around a while', you may understand that better than most. Some ideals, methodologies and practices remain the same. A good troubleshooter in the IT industry doesn't need to know every in and out of the equipment they manage as long as they remember the basics. Good problem resolution comes from good practices. Process of elimination works regardless of your set up. Finding the common link, or the central point of failure is a learned skill that you can't find in an owners manual. Trust your instincts and remember to step back out of the problem in order to be as effective as possible. These types of things will always be a valuable asset for any company.

You need to find a way to politely give users what they NEED instead of what they WANT without cuasing political problems
Accept the fact that you will make decisions without all the information you need. Go as far as you can the use your "professional Instincts" to decide. Also, Product consultations for the IT part of ERP packages is measured in Weeks and not days of consulants time - get as much free as you can before you buy. For the actual ERP users its measured in Months of consulting time.

I have 4 sons and have warned them, and threatened them, about having ANY idea of getting into IT. I've taught them enough to take care of themselves with computers but strongly suggest another line of work!

I, too, have been in the IT industry for 20 years, and the best piece of advice I got early on from a supervisor was "never assume the end-user did exactly what they told you they did." A good basic example would be about rebooting an OS. When you ask the end user, "did you reboot your computer?" They may say "yes", not realizing what rebooting a system really is. Some people think 'rebooting' just means closing their program/application and re-launching it. I have grown accustomed to simply checking the system's Task Manager and seeing the CPU Time to determine if the system has been rebooted recently.

I don't understand what's wrong with adding third-party software to a Windows platform. I use numerous non-Microsoft applications on multiple Windows machines. Some of these are open source, or shareware apps written by someone in a basement somewhere. Some of them are complex, high-end audio tools produced by larger companies. I wouldn't say none of these ever misbehave, but typically they're as stable as Microsoft applications (for what that's worth).

I said it before Jack...seems to me you have learned nothing in 20 years. Windows is for the home user period and although Linux is also a UNIX derivative and has advanced a lot since conception the problem is the PC architecture...of course you don't understand why probably because you are not an engineer and know the nuts and bolts of computer design. IBM, HP, Oracle/Solaris (Sun Microsystems) are Linux compatible now but if I buy their hardware I be dam if I use Linux. The biggest mistake those companies have made is to use the Intel architecture instead of the RISC architecture they use before and that mistake will cost them the world market they enjoyed before.
You won't use Windows in the workplace, and you won't use Linux on hardware from most major manufacturers. What do you use in the workplace, Apple?
Good list... but "thin skinned need not apply" is funny. It should be a tenet of IT hiring, but oddly I see mostly developers and network admins that are "never wrong" and smug about it even when faced with facts otherwise. And, that's with over 12 years of IT in 4 industries, be it Healthcare IT, Retail/E-Commerce IT, TeleComm IT or Defense Department.... conincidental, I think not. cheers! happy

Your comments #s 1 and 2 are a huge part of #8. The "fear" of change is called experience. Vendors are promising the moon and stars, but those of us that have been around - and the smart ones with the checkbooks - know to stay away from the "bleeding edge". Businesses have to deal with multiple systems and the vendors who provide them upgrade on different schedules. Your vendor for one software package does not necessarily know how their changes will impact the rest of your environment. You have to be very careful when upgrading one so that no dependencies get broken.
By point.
1. Yes, what do sales people know anyway?
2. Even microsoft software can crash a windows machine. I've got windows as the number 3 OS behind Mac which is a branch of Unix, Unix/FreeBSD/Linux and then Windows, with linux being the absolute best value with Ubuntu being the "best" version at the moment. Have tested many distros in the past few months. You do need to do homework to be able to use Linux.
3. Not just desk tops and servers. Any machine that runs/works is going to fail at some point. Plan on it.
4. Most people, if you believe general servey polls, don't even know the three branches of government in the USA let alone the nuances of RAID or even what RAID stands for. No surprise here.
5. Have first hand knowledge of a multi billion dollar international company that screwed up and lost several months worth of data because they had failed to do backups due to personel issues.
6. Move company data and secrets to somewhere out of the companies control? Maybe, but certianly not an automatic for everyone. Besides, clouds biggest and best trick is on demand scaling. If you don't need that, maybe you don't need cloud.
7. Linux still requires many hours of research to master. Not exactly an easy deal.
8. Always amazed at how the talking heads don't ever discuss case studies. Theory is nice but practical application is where software lives and dies.
9. You can use a boot disk and recover .qbb or .qbw files and you should before you even think about touching a slowbooks install, so not getting that. Not doing field work anymore, but generally avoided, I always ran/run my own company, poorly designed systems that were seriously screwed up. Low probability of meeting customer expectations and a ton of land mines to include the possibility that the customers system never worked properly in the first place. In companies that I did all the systems for, no problem: I did everything myself with maintance in mind, so generally achieved good results. In the early days got stuck pulling 20 hour days for free when things went bad. You need to be careful what you attempt and how you go about it. If you aren't sure what you are doing, best to excuse yourself and re-evaluate. If you have a boss from hell, get a new job. No self respecting person should put up with that crap.
10. I always say that if by some magic I was to know every thing there was to know about IT just before you asked me if I knew everything about IT, by the time I said "Yes", I wouldn't any more and that futher if anyone told you then knew everything about computers or even just about one operating system that they were either lying or stupid. Okay, so some masters master level techs are unbelievablely good, but they still don't know everything. If you can't figure things out quick, go into management or some other position where being wrong/uninformed isn't immeadiately appearent.
After 30 years, I've concluded that there is one lesson all IT people should learn immediately: don't tell anyone you're in IT.

The folks outside of work ("lice" - that is, the ones who want to, "pick your brain") will call you whenever 1) their wireless router needs rebooting, 2) they can't figure out how to install memory, 3) they need MS Office -- but don't want to pay for it, 4) they want to buy a computer and - unlike any other time - want your advice (which they will ignore anyway, in favor of buying a Gateway or some other POS).

As for work, the more you exhibit you know, the more likely you'll be feared - especially by ... (sorry, giggling hard at the moment)... "Information Security" folks. Most organizations operate under the golden principle that ignorance (of computer systems) *is* their primary ring of security. After all, if you don't know what access you have, you can't cause damage. And, since they don't know to lock down, or the systems they use don't have the ability to lock down security, or even where to find a log (provided logging is even turned on), well, anyone who comes along with two neurons to rub together is instantly branded a dangerous hacker.

Oh - the ones who's hair turns gray in the first year: those are called, "fakes." They've very likely never even built a computer, or programmed a computer, let alone have the qualifications for the job they lied on their CV/resume to get.
I wish it were that simple, but it is true....everybody wants to chat you up but they rarely take your advice and they wind up with junk. And your point about being feared is true. You cannot tell the dentist office that their wireless security is weak and you were able to get into their files from your phone. But the ones who have gray hair in a year, sometimes they get that from rescuing a totally infected network of Win95 systems.
The only thing an IT person should think about is not platforms, security, clouds, OS's or one's self. They may be good for conversation and articles, but that's all. The only reason IT exists is to make sure everyone else can get their assigned job done. And while fixing the issues is vital, it is far from the most important part of the job. Keeping the corporate users feeling that they have what they need to get their job done is THEE key. If more IT people would remember that, there would be a lot less conflicts between IT and the rest the the users.

I learn of new products and applications on a weekly basis. Some are things that have been previously done (better?) by non-electronic means, but many of them are completely new or provide a function that didn't exist before. I guess one could stretch 'done before' to say social networking is just a bathroom wall or that cell phones are just long distance shouting.
There is nothing more irritating, or dangerous, than an incompetent manager.
I'd like to add that the real cost of hardware goes far beyond hardware SLA's and should be ongoing IT hardware equipment costs should be salvaged by purchasing gently used or refurbished IT hardware.
...so how do you know when you apply for a job there.
- Ask the manager, director or VP directly how they view IT, you'd be surprised how often their answers can be very revealing
- Look at their annual report!
I can't tell you in such little space how to analyze all this. Why do you think IT workers jump around so much? If you will be viewed as ONLY an expense and not a business critical team member, RUN!!!
So, this is what I've learned after 25 years in IT, dig deep for the best places to work.
It's worth it.

with the possible exception of the part about "install only software from microsoft" I have to pretty much agree with the rest. I do wonder how different the world would be, if we told the complete, unadulterated truth about everything. Would people still buy stuff? I dunno. They probably would not buy anything NEW but that's just my prejudice talking.

Agreed that you will eventually contract malware, but Microsoft's virus scanner/remover/blocker tools are no better than anyone else's. And small outfits, actually spend TIME and help you sort things out. That is called "quality" and small outfits can afford to do it, where large outfits often can't or don't, because of the bold decision by some bean counter in an obscure corner of an office somewhere.

for 2 decades in the IT industry I saw a lot of zealots but my observation is that Windows servers are gaining territory faster then the *nix distros in the desktops and notebooks. And the main challenge for MS are the high expectations from the new versions of their OS-es. Another thing is that there is plenty of third-party software which runs fine on windows systems and you could not expect just to pile software on top of the OS and every thing to work fine. Besides most of the times the problems are not with the OS, but among the mentioned third-party applications themselves. And regarding security which is my area of interest, MS made a huge advance. It is yet to see how the IOS and Android will be affected by the same plaques but it already started.

Thanks for a great read and a very accurate view of the IT field.

Point #1 - A cause of much pain and suffering. Take everything the salesman / consultant says with a bucket of salt. Where possible ignore them and instead talk to the customers on the sites where their stuff has already been rolled out.

Point #2 - Certainly true but on a few occasions even when I added Microsoft software to a Microsoft machine the stability went out of the window! happy
...is that double disk failures do occur in the same array - we had two at the same time and another one a few months later. This was nothing to do with ignoring "replace-me" messages, just really bad coincidence of hardware failures. It's why we take and check regular backups so that we can rebuild the entire array from bare metal if we have to. Things got better when we bought Netapp filers with dual redundancy arrays; we are still waiting for three drives to fail at the same time in the same array.
A RAID controller card and two hard disks all failed simultaneously in a RAID5 array with no warnings right before the 4th of July break this year.

In any IT department, there are people who are very skilled at doing their job, and those that are very skilled at keeping their job. These two sets appear to be mutually exclusive.
Whenever a new senior manager (with no IT background - to bring a fresh prespective 'kay..) gets his teeth into one of the latest buzzwords I start cringing - a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
... running out onto the battlefield and commanding the soldiers.
Whether you send an email, a set of instructions, or teach, most (not all) users will not follow, not read, not listen, or, for those who get the info, forget it later.
I have a backup appliance that delivers everything promised (Eversync -formerly Revinetix).
Printers has always and always will spell trouble. Drivers, codetables, ink, paper jams, paper size, spooling problems etc.
Software, hardware, design, bar codes, RFID, printers, programmers, media, ribbons, lamination, thermal, inkjet, and anything else that trauma has blocked from my memory. Unless you're in a graphics shop, avoid them like a rabid pit bull with AIDS.
"They" must design their own labels to peel off, stick in and ruin their own label printers.

"IT will give you gray hair"; this is a very intelligent observation. I was a DBA who was charged with administering a large network while developing software applications. At the same time, staff members brought their personal laptops, mobile phones and watches to me for repairs.

This quantitative overload planted lots of grey hairs on my head.
While it was not the case prior to assuming those responsibilities, I am surprised that I am not the only victim.

First you plan, then you do, then you check, and finally you act. Spend more time on 1 and 3 you fill find 2 and 4 are much easier.
A lot of this is true except Jack's Linux vs Windows statements. I have an awful lot of Windows desktops and servers out there that are not and have never been infected or compromised, and I have also seen the easily compreomised environments he speaks of. It depends largely on how you administer Windows. I can't tell you just how stupid some of the Windows IT people are, using common word passwords that match the usernames, no firewalls, 3rd party apps that don't belong... If you treat Windows with the intelligence and respect you'd treat Linux, then the security is pretty solid. i see the password attempts, I see the malware coming in from spam, but am i being infected? No. I'd say less that 1% of my Windows boxes get anything on them over their entire long LIFE. There are a lot of reasons why Linux is a bad bet for business on the desktops, including the end user experience being a half-baked attempt to keep up with the functionality we expect in Windows and macs. Talk about FUD! He's right about the 3rd party apps... if you instal something that's written like garbage and then wonder why your OS is acting flaky, then you need to ask why you really need that software and what has it done? Another point is #11: Wipe the pre-installed versions of Windows and install clean from your own OEM/Volume license disk. The vendors break so much stuff with all those useless apps and trial wares and bizzarre configurations. The hour or so it takes to install a clean version of Windows and updated drivers is well worth it before deploying that and expecting years of good service.

as a generic term to describe all client or stand-alone computing systems: desktop, laptop, tablet, notebook, phone. The point is to be proactive in defending your system against the certainty of attack.
Found myself in similar places sometimes. I'll add that some people believe everything is so simply to buy and use for how it looks, that it should be a fool's job to make it work.
Once you think you have all the answers, they change you all the questions....

After being in both academics and IT I think another excellent point is if you want to find out how well you know something, try to teach it accurately.
I've attended plenty of college classes with professors who know their stuff backwards and sideways but don't know how to teach. I can't teach worth a fried motherboard myself.
texznet has a point. Trying to teach, even if you're not a good teacher, will really expose any gaps in your knowledge. You should try to teach a rank beginner, especially if you're very experienced; it's a humbling experience.
Twenty-some-odd years in IT have taught me that Murphy's Law is the basis of the universe. Maybe the fact that my name is Murphy has something to do with this viewpoint.

One more challenge in IT is that we need to be efficient 24/7. Whenever my phone rings in holidays, I wish it should not be an emergency call. I have abruptly ended my personal work for emergency breakdown calls most of the times in my career. Now I am used to it.

I've seen it many times that people would like to achieve something without proper resources. Either they don't have hardware, or they go with minimal/cheapest offer. Or they say "We don't need all the planning now, just do it, we'll sort documentation at the end".
After about 20 years also I concur with my learned colleague's points. I would add that as an IT person every problem that arises is your personal fault because you represent all of "IT" to the user, you are the designer and architect of all IT systems to them.
The industry is probably one of the most dynamic areas around, you have to learn every day, never regard yourself as a "Guru", there are no Gurus, only people with a little more specialized insight and skills.
IT people are often guilty of looking down on users, and not understanding their specific areas of work.

SAS, OBIEE, Business Objects) and even their own servers to run Oracle/SQL Server databases. Similarly, for any office job, it is implied that an applicant needs to be experienced with MS Office.

2) Process improvement (ie. Six Sigma) has made working in Corporate America more challenging than ever. Everyone expects you to do more with less while working on multiple projects simultaneously and being able to deliver on time. At the same time, a typical day at the office includes multiple meetings, phone calls, putting out fires, random cube stops, conference calls, e-mails, IMs, and voice mails, encumbering your day to such a point that it's past 12noon and you have not accomplished a thing!

3) Related to point #2, the situations created in the office environment can be immeasurably stressful. It is not unusual to work 10-20 extra unpaid hours per week (as a salaried employee) to meet deadlines. You can let this slide a few times, but when it happens on a regular basis, it begins to eat away at you when you realize that you are not being paid for your time.

4) In my observations, today's office culture is extremely competitive and full of liars, backstabbers, cut-throats, and connivers. You need to make sure you CC all the necessary individuals and save/archive every single e-mail you send out as potential evidence in a s/he said s/he said situation.

5) Related to #2, you are forced to fill out self-reviews and complete documentation to evaluate yourself and your performance, which determines your bonus (if your company offers it). So even if you know you've invested every last fiber of your being into producing high-quality deliverables and your manager does not agree with you, your bonus and/or potential salary raise and/or imagine in the department/company can be negatively affected. Basically, there is a lot of cronyism and subjectivity in today's office workplace, giving rise to point #3.

There are many great open source and third party tools, for a plethora of services and functions that work great without payin' Micro$oft.

Knowing the good tools is the trick - opening the door for users to download apps discovered via a google search, or by inadvertent drive-by "plug-ins", is negligent.

It's like anything - soft control and education go a long way. Remember... support people!
In most cases those of us who are in a habit of backing up our C:Drive have no need to backup the entire drive which means including the OEM D:Drive which allows a fresh install of Windows. Most all Mfg's include a recovery partition. It's very important to create your Recovery Disks using the Mfg's software within the first few days of owning your computer. Just make the disks and store them in a safe place.

Backing up with Windows 7 is easy and very efficient with it's own backup/restore utility. I happen to use 3rd party software to backup my C:Drive every day but feel confident with the Backup/Restore Utility that comes with Windows 7 (all versions). I backup my C:Drive every day because I am in the business of remote support for Windows users around the world (home PC owners). But regardless of how you use your computer making a C:Drive backup (system image) is the most important task you will ever perform on your choice of computer.

To be quite frank, it is amazing to me that after 10 years of Personal Computers being a "household applicance" that still less than 1% of home computer users do a system backup on a regular basis. When you've done it once it's as easy as creating and sending an email.

There will always be a need to backup one's HDD or SDD C: Partion. Though we will be interacting with the Cloud in many ways it's a long way off before there is "no operatying system" in a PC or even a Mac. Something has to be local to interact with the Cloud.

So! If you are not in a habit of backing up your HDD or SDD start today! You WILL save yourself from sheer agony should your drive get a nasty infection or crashes.

Note: To reinstall everything and customize your email client, toolbars, taskbar, notification area, reinstall all your programs, remove the crapware included by the Mfg, and get all your Favorites and Bookmarks back takes hours. A recovery from a System Image may take only 30 minutes or maybe 2 hours depending on how much information is on your C:Drive.

#5 No backups aren't always forgotten until they are needed. Maybe with inexperienced and untrained Windows users and small companies that rely solely on Windows that is true. However in the world of IBM Mainframes and similar mid range and large scale systems, we learned a long time ago not to forget the backups. Then we passed that information on to the newbies that came into our organizations.

I have learnt that in the same way a policeman will never pull you over to tell you you are driving really well that its very difficult to get thanks in this industry until something goes wrong and you a) are prepared for it 100% and fix it quickly b) play a blinder and work a great solution at speed. Even then, that can be short lived happy thats why it can be soooo tempting to just keep the lights on and not introduce change. . . but you have to because you need to be one step ahead. OH! and I have learnt and I also hate when an outsider makes a project sound really easy by simply summising how straight forward something should be without the first clue about your network or business. .

I've been reading "Life Code" by Dr. Phil replete with "The Evil Eight" and he points out that the world has changed. I think he's sugar coated it and it's even more evil than he paints it, but he points out that particularly in the last 10 years the old standards of working hard, being honest and all the factors of integrity have passed from the scene and we all need a new strategy to be a success. It's been even more than that, if you consider that "Moral Mazes" by Robert Jackall was written in the 1980s. The posts I see here on ZDnet do not inspire any sort of hope that management will ever become objective, honest and have a measure of integrity again.

The really bad thing about all this is that many of us in IT have been swept up into the "end justifies the means" ethic of "jist gitter dun" mentality with no real commitment to quality, reducing excellence to trashy commodities which may be fast and cheap but aren't particularly good.

So the experience is one which now, you probably aren't going to prosper -- particularly if you have any sort of what is moral, ethical, legal and proper -- you are going to have to settle for survival at best. I'm not sure I can recommend "Life Code" for a solution, but if you haven't gotten and read often, "Snakes in Suits" by Dr. Paul Babiak and Dr. Robert Hare, "Without Conscience" by Dr. Robert Hare (what I wouldn't give for an encephalegram of managers), "The Management Trap" by Dr. Chris Argyris and the DSM-IV, you probably are at a gross disadvantage. You need to know your enemy thoroughly and have a strategy to deal with it.

And for those of you who will join me in exiting the realm of insanity -- in my case retirement, but some of you a significant career change, say to landscaping, for example -- I heartily recommend for your recovery, "Take Back Your Life: Recovering from Cults and Abusive Relationships" by Janja Lalich and Madeleine Tobias, because you'll need it.

Sure, 30 years ago, life was good and for some in niche environments, it still is, but the world has changed and not in a very good direction when it comes to honesty, integrity, quality of relationships and trust -- particularly from and with those who hold any kind of power, and particularly those who have allowed themselves the luxury of sinking into evil by adopting the dark side of the force.

Often seen that if a project is successful you're thanked for assisting in the process that aided the admin to make the project successful. If there's a problem... any problem... the mob with torches and pitch forks are waiting for you and they have a long memory.
Does Redmond write your paycheck? Really? MORE stable? You've been in IT for 20 years? From MY 20 years of experience, nothing guarantees the instability of a computer MORE than installing Microsoft products. Other publishers at least try to appear as if they are observant of memory and storage constraints. Microsoft figures if your machine isn't big enough to run thier bloatware, then it's YOUR fault and you should just buy more RAM and a bigger drive. How many times have you seen a system unable to boot because of pooched patches and updates from Microsoft? I've seen it more times than I should have. Show me a computer running only Microsoft apps for productivity and collaboration, and I'll show you a system running slower than one that runs mixed party software, and one that needs more Helpdesk attention as well.
Yes, 'pundits' do live in the 'cloud' a cloud of disconnect. Technology is a tool for productivity and quality, not the end goal itself.
Been in the business >20 years and one thing I've learned is that technology moves in cycles. I cut my teeth on an interpreted language. Wasn't long before I had to deal with a compiled language. Later on back to interpreted then back to compiled. Some of these changes have to do with the capability of the platform. Whatever the case you'll likely do a bit of tail chasing if you stay in the business more than five years.
My favorite line:

Nobody cares about the backups. They will only care about the restore. Do you really go around and say "The Backups were successful last night. yea!"

#3 is just false. I have used Windows for a decade and never been compromised. I'm accept the argument that it is far, far more likely that you'll be compromised by using Windows vs. something else, but please don't make patently false blanket statements.
This is the most realistic article that has been written in a long time - with the exception of only installing Microsoft products - it is describing the common sense of the industry.

After working for around 23 years in the IT that is plus 3 years extra than the writer of the article I have an additional point to make here, users, managers, owners think that IT can do anything and everything under the sun without any logic. IT should be like a God to solve any and every problem which comes accross.

11) Everything you learn has a half life of about 18 months. Probably the flipside of Moore's law. How to compile a cobol programme? Gone long ago. The ongoing importance of testing backups and every other thing you rely upon. Still with us!

12) Users and buyers can do the sloppiest job around but will always blame the vendor or the sales guy! Maybe they were badly deceived but maybe they didn't do a very good job!


It's easy isn't it? We get paid on it so we must be lying. Get real guys! Remember Caveat Emptor? Test the vendor, ask questions, run trials. I love it when a prospect behaves like a sceptical, polite grown up, it makes my life easy. It's when they behave like a sullen uncommunicative teenager it becomes difficult.

From the supplier's side we see IT managers who have no idea of the reality (Yea we've got all that, yea we'll assign folk to test and validate etc etc.- No one and nothing is the actuality) but when you get in the trenches or hit problems it's all forgotten. It becomes a pin the blame on the vendor game.

Some folk behave as if having bought something from us they own us and our time for evermore. They can demand stuff they didn't bother foreseeing because we should have guessed it!

Are you all admitting that you can't be bothered investing your IT dollars carefully and so you just believe half baked assurances. Are you admitting that you can't be bothered to manage risk, that you can't test stuff? To be fair some can't because they are too busy sorting out various other poorly selected and managed systems.

Of course there is dishonesty, ignorance, marketing and cheating in every part of the supply chain from Vendor to end user. It is made up of humans. And because there are humans, that also means that there are plenty of great enthusiastic, clever people ready willing and able to deliver a good job and go the extra mile or seven.

In the end it's a people job and a technology job and both of them can delight and surprise or anger and disappoint.

This article is so true about IT job.I s very hard to catch up with technologies and business needs is this days. A co-worker use to said "we always working with the impossible". Over the years I learn the if we keep a balance with people skills and Technology we can do it better. but never enough for some company they always want more and more and more.

All are so true. Regrettably, #6 is the newest one and its truth is not yet recognized. We just need a few very high profile "cloud crashes" to bring people back to Earth. A major bank crash would be a wonderful illustrative example, especially when one can't use their ATM and/or credit card because the "cloud" is down.

I have learned that the first thing you ask a user after finding out the description of the problem is to ask the user, "what is the last thing you did before it started exhibiting this behavior?"
ways to earn a living than being blamed for everything digital not being perfect as the sales narrative demands, but it took me longer than 10 years, more like 15.

For example:

1) When you really realize how little you know about something like an ERP system / module, you are ready to become a consultant.

2) Being a consultant is far less about having a lot of knowledge about an area, and much more about knowing where to find knowledge for your use.

3) Project Managers for consulting implementation projects assign 125% of project plan tasks in any 8-hour "assgined" work period. They are paid to. You are paid to be behind in your work as a result. Actually, you are paid to be able to identify those tasks that you have been assigned that are garbage and disregard them... well, at least until the PM asks you for their status... wink

4) You, as an IT person, are half as important at your company as a sales person who spends each night on his expense account getting liquored. Wait, you're actually only one-quarter as important... no, that's wrong to... maybe one-eighth... if you're lucky and really good... Get used to this perspective!

5) The unspoken truth of an implementation project of a core system at a client... is that the work is never expected to end from the view of the consulting company.

6) One million articles exist that state that training your employees is the best way to reduce their stress and make them more productive (and, thus, retain them for far longer periods of tenure as they will enjoy their jobs more... which will rub off on others at the company... and help improve their work lives... and so on, and so on). Nevertheless, in IT, you will not get training because it cannot be directly traced back to improved profit (though, anyone with a mind for numbers can surely illustrate the cost-savings of retention of employees, and having fewer employees do more, better work... that will just be ignored, though).

7) If you are billed by the hour to clients (and are highly billable), you will have more success getting a wild tiger to adopt your newborn as her own than to get your consulting firm to train you in what you are supposed to be an expert on. Those who suck at the client site will get all of your training that you should have received.

8) Tech Republic talks a lot about "hot certifications"... that's what it is... "hot air".

9) If you are paying for consultants, some of them don't have a clue what they are supposed to be doing...

and so many more... happy
No plan survives first contact with the executives.
Companies always, always, always discount the cost of integrating a new line of business application. Vendors do it, because they know that you won't buy their product if it seems too expensive, A favored ploy is to minimize requirements, as in "sure, your 5 yr old server meets our minimum specs. The other fav: minimize training requirements, or better yet, offer 2 days online training included, then charge $1500/day for onsite training when you are lost. I blame companies and vendors equally for this.
Beware the "over friendly" User.
Many a time I have had that 'particular' individual/ user start to become overly friendly. Before you know it, you have a regular stream of requests from this person , or the foreign (is a personal issue with their home PC) job thrown in for good measure. There is always that doubt arises that the "over friendly user" seems less and less willing to work out why they have wound up in a mess and their dependency on you increases.

Most (not all) of these new friends , will , shortly after you have sweated blood to fix their problems, forget you ever existed.

Dont fall into the trap this person sets for you, always ensure your requests are managed, and that if it is personal work undertaken they understand that a transaction is required.

Just had to share this. As I read this article, specifically the part about backups having to be monitored otherwise it won't be there when you need it, I decided to just check out my daily backups, and sure enough, it hasn't been working for the last 20-odd days! Haha.

Thanks for that heads-up!

I agree that backups should not be forgotten and it is true that they need [adult] supervision. One other practice that you should be engaged in on a regularly scheduled basis is to test your backups. Have a time set aside where you take a server offline and recover it from your backup on another box. If it doesn't work, adjust your backup/recovery settings and/or strategy until it does. It also doesn't hurt to virtualize - it can be a much quicker process to recover a virtual server vs a physical one.
According to the users you should know everything, i. e., if the user has a problem with an accounting application; you should be an expert not only in IT but in accounting. The same its true for financing, legal, and every other knowledge area. You have to be such an erudite!
Yeah, all ideas you shown are perfectly true from my point of view. And I also think that working in IT for years really do harm for most people, as IT pros need to care messes of information and techs for this virtual world but fall behind in enjoying the real life.
I saw several entries for number eleven, and at least one for # 12, so I'll add the thirteenth thing that one learns from IT: Murphy's Law is the basic principle of the universe.
Its interesting to see you mention #1 "Companies Promise.." because at no less then 2 previous employers, when I had mentioned something similiar (but instead of saying it in general I would mention specific companies) I was criticized for being "Negative". It didn't matter whether or not it was true only what the perception was. That too is a big issue with the bussiness world today. The focus is on perception and not actually quality of product/service.
