I deployed Ubuntu onto an aging laptop (max 1GB ram, 20GB HDD, 1.7MHz processor) that simply couldn't handle XP anymore. It is an improvement over XP, but still could be faster. Permanently connecting it to a network share took lots of research, trial and error. It still locks up, produces obscure error messages, and periodically requests that I download hundreds aof megabytes of updates. I am currently investigating some of the lighter distributions as alternatives for this machine.
While I want to become more expert in Linux, this machine needs to just work for my wife to be able to just check emails, check weather, use audio player, etc.
