I don't consider myself a "Linux Guru" by any means,
but I would still recommend Slax for your older computer. I boot my little
Acer Aspire One ZG5 to Slax via USB drive, and I'm able to do just about
anything I want, especially those things you listed. Although it's been a
few years since the last update, there is renewed interest in a new version.
The forum there is also very valuable for finding help.

edit to add: If you decide to try Slax, be sure and get the SNS-TOOL module
(for WiFi), and maybe the Opera 10.10 browser module as sometimes the
older version of Firefox included goes haywire for me. I'm currently testing an
Opera 11.64 module that I converted from a Slackware package...so far
working pretty well. Might even make it public if I don't encounter unknown
bugs!
