A potential hardware issue. like an impending hard drive failure. I've thankfully not had to endure more then one such instance. you may want to run a diagnostic test if you can ASAP. But not knowing what the error says, I couldn't say for certain. in any case you may wish to post about it on the Ubuntu Forums if you've not done so already. remember to be thorough when relating details of the error so they can help you better. naturally you'll want to list your hardware specs as well.
I have an old Toshiba, 1Ghz with 512MB RAM and 30GB HD (use a PCI card for wireless or ethernet). When I first installed 10.04 on it, it was fast. But over time, the updates took their toll and now it runs slow. I have read that while the file system doesn't fragment like windows, the file placement, over time, can reduce performance (free space gets scattered) and it helps to DD to another drive and DD back (besides, it also is a good backup).
I for think its a kewl idea to intergrate some apps as far as security that will be always a risk nobody what OS you use. Nobody is say you have to use them in the first place, there is always other software you can use. I like the fact that they are always moving forward making it easier for the users. Each user is different and if the OS gives you a variety of choices to customize it the way you want i think that is a good thing. Signed Just an opinion
Someday web integration will be secure and work smoothly. Until then leave the web in the browser.
I use 12.04 LTS now, as a secondary OS to Windows. I am waiting for 12.10 to try it out and see if I like it. I do like Unity and also Gnome 2.6/3.0. Not a fan of KDE that much. Though I am NOT going to buy Windows 8, even though the upgrade is only $40.
12.10 puts Ubuntu ahead of OS X and Windows usability-wise with the integration of cloud services into Unity. Successfully bridging the gap between cloud-based apps and desktop ones is a benchmark of a progressive OS.
As long as the privacy in the clouds is flawed, cloud are better avoided...
Why lock people to a cloud? And push their privacy onto a server?
And all without any warning.
Apps that connect to a cloud should never be default.
Sure i also use cloud stuff, but I don't want my pc to access any cloud by default at boot time. In this case a windows style pop up "YOUR PRIVACY IS NOW BEING UNDERMINED, ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO CONTINUE?" would be nice to raise some user awareness.
