I like the black italics 1987 logo better. They could have simply added the colored squares to the old logo and had a good change representing their new (former Metro) theme. Some shadow on a black font would have still been simplistic and better than the dull gray.
thought processes and attitudes, but it should also include a big red pool underneath to represent their shark like marketing practices.

Maybe it is a symptom of boring and uninspiring product design. I think Apple has taken up the leadership in innovation, like the Surface copy of the iPad. In times gone past we used to use the phrase "Chinese copy", increasingly I use the term "Microsoft copy". Probably they are all squares at Microsoft with no artistic ability!

MS adds the familiar four-color window pane to its corporate logo at the same time they release a new version of Windows that's had the color blocks removed.

I preferred the old 'waving flag' style of window pane, but it's not going to change my opinion of MS either way.
touch sensitive icons and that's how you'll open the next version of Windows - touch one square for the Business apps, another for the MS made Apps, another for the non-MS apps, and the fourth for the multimedia stuff, and a touch on the word (be it Windows or Microsoft) opens the equivalent of My Computer.

now that I've typed this, I got public copyright on the idea.
before someone in Redmond reads it and takes it seriously. They'll 'improve' your idea as follows - Red = My Music, Green = My Videos, Blue = Twitter, Yellow = Facebook.

Now, aren't you sorry you opened your pie hole?
prior art while I sue them for a few hundred million for theft of my idea.

These days it seems to be a common trend to go with ads and logos that express a "minimalist" theme, so the new logo definitely fits the style. Although it may seem dull and uninspired, it still retains the recognizability of the brand with the four distinctly colored squares and I'm actually glad that MS didn't try to go the other way and create something overly flamboyant instead.
Develop something minimalistic that simply works properly, is what I mean.

BLOCKHEADS at MS!
The WORLD is going towards streamlining icons; designs; cars etc
A CAR designed like a BLOCK would experience MASSIVE wind resistance and subsequent sh*tty gas mileage.
TYPICAL REDMOND!!!
Seems to me that those logos served well for a trillion-dollar company over the years, and I expect the new logo will be fine, too. Hopefully, Mr. Duckett has a real knock-out logo for his enterprise.

The story in the local media (includes Redmond) was that Microsoft elected to do their own logo development rather than spend a small fortune having an outside company do it. And .. it only took .... SIX MONTHS to produce that 'design!'

I have a hard time comprehending that.

The new logo is flat and boring .. no 'character' to it at all. If they wanted a plain, block font, then at least put the colored squares in the 'flying window' format. But I guess they wanted to carry through with the child's blocks like the Metr.... ooops! Can't say that anymore .. I mean the 'modern' interface.

It kind of goes along with their current trend: bland.
I, for one, prefer it. I like color.

I agree - color is great. But adding color to a flat, boring design doesn't make it more memorable. Now, it's a 'colorful' flat, boring design. We're back to making changes just to be making them that lack substance.

They could have opened a 'new logo design' contest to the local high schools. I bet in their 6 months, they could have had some outstanding entries.
... fixing what isn't broke instead of what is, and focusing on looks rather than substance.
