Yup
Well, some of that is true. I don't think Apple can sell just anything, forever. But they sell based on good marketing and the whole iPhone gestalt, rather than excelling at any single feature. With that said, older models were technically ahead, at least on some bulletpoints. That list has been shrinking with each release.

And unless they really fall behind, that doesn't matter. Apple users aren't necessarily even looking at Android or other devices, when it comes time to upgrade. Even with the incremental nature of their devices, year-on-year, they generate more excitement and more buyout-upgrades than any other company. You know right away that the new iPhone is better than your current iPhone... and you must have that new one. You've been primed for the last month or more.

Apple's mastered the art of turning "iPhone Day" into not just a widely watched marketing event, but part of the culture. They work hard to build expectations, via leaks, rumors, and then the big press event a week before "iPhone Day". They limit the available units on that day, to ensure both record day-one sales and lots of sellouts (which vanish in a few days), all of which is good for free press, and keeps the mythos going.

There's not that much room in there to worry about technology. And they're also now even "rationing" that tech. After all, "SIRI" was one of the big features of the iPhone 4S. But that could have run on any iPhone -- like Google's much older voice processing, most of the work is done on their servers. Sure, the "beta" nature was probably needed to ensure users didn't clobber those servers (Google already had the server farms, and wasn't dropping this on a gigantic network of devices all at once). It's quite possible they'll be doing similar things again, locking software features to the new device or locking them out on older devices, simply because a cool software feature costs less, but can still be just as much of a selling point.

And ... particularly when viewed from behind rose-colored glassed while sitting in range of a Reality Distortion Field happy
