I won't argue about low cost/quality components
But even if I do have to replace mine every 5 years, his has to last 30, and still perform like new to be worth the price. And I have the added benefit of being able to get something newer and faster each time I buy again. I could even switch up from a notebook to a tablet if I want. He'll still be using the same old machine the whole time.

Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages, but I'd be very surprised if his MacBook lasts for 15 years, let alone for 30. But even if it does, at the rate technology advances, he will want to replace it with something newer and faster a long time before that.
