Motorola sure beats Apple in battery life capacity 21.1 hours on the latest Razr's.
One of my pet hates is the lack of water resistance or better still waterproofing on mobiles.

The defy claims to be water resistant and this is a good sign.

I want all mobiles to ultimately be waterproof.

BTW it may only be 16 hrs on some networks/devices - but still impressive.

I am happy with my iPhone 4 battery life so far, but good to see progress.

Doesnt matter how good it is the apple flock will still buy it in the thousands !!!
By now every one knows that the Apple flock will buy ANYTHING Apple and they number in the millions. So seriously Apple doesnt really have to have any information pre-released. Just say "New Apple product on sale July 26." and they will make millions. But at least it give the regular people some one to point at and laugh. So you have my approval to conduct business as usual. happy

Look up Jimmy Kimmel Iphone 5. He brought an iphone 4S to a bunch of people on the street and told them it was the new iphone. They kept raving about how much larger the screen was, how much faster it was, and how much better it was. And these were people who owned 4S'!

So, what you are trying to say is that iPhone owners are idiots? OK. I'm sure that is has nothing to do with the fact that many Americans are idiots, as shown on multiple occasions on Jay Leno's show when they go "on the street" and ask such complicated questions as.. Who's the Secretary of State? Who's the Vice President? Who was the first President? And people get those wrong all the time. It's nothing like that, right?

Being oblivious to politics and world events is one thing. Being oblivious to the point that you don't even recognize when you're being shown something you already own and use everyday and told it's the "new" version, and you buying it, that's on another level.

So..
BBaldwin803 14th Sep
So, you're saying that being duped by someone telling you that the device they just handed you is the new iPhone and then sticking a camera in your face is more idiotic than not knowing who the 1st President of the US was? Really? Interesting take on it.

one of them was holding their own iPhone 4S in their other hand, and still saying how much better the new one is - this isn't a case of "ignorance" or "stupidity", it's a case of how people will say that the new Apple product is wonderful, no matter if it's an old one they're holding - it's part of being "blinded" by Apple's marketing

That's really funny, as they are holding the 4S they can't tell its the same.
And let me guess,... I bet he didn't show any of the people who saw through his prank.

Hmmm.... who got fooled?

ok $299 for 32Gb model seems ok in USA, but in Australia same is RRP $899
and still no Killer feature
And then you will have to support it, and it will make you hate it more

don't forget the additional $150+ for unlocking!
iPhone is unlocked from Apple Store

Optus has been free to unlock from Optus after 6 months.

Optus unlocked my iPhone 3GS without me asking, they SMSed me and said they had unlocked it just to save me calling to ask.

Telstra used to charge to unlock, even if you bought it outright. As I understand it Telstra has stopped this blatant rip-off.

So I take your point as a complaint against Telstra and not a problem with Apple then?

It is only this price with a 2yr contract. The buy out price in the US is similar to Australia.

16GB $799, 32 GB $899, 64 GB $999

why not USB
Al_nyc 13th Sep
If they were going to screw all their existing customers who invested a lot of money on accessories that use the 30 pin jack, why not go to a standard mini USB jack? Not to mention charging $100 for 16b of memory when $100 will easily buy you a 128 gb SD card. It's the stupid little things that apple does that keeps me away from their products.

Your logical brain is not the target market for apple iphones.
The new connector is not just a USB data & power port, it has other digital signals.

iOS does not use storage cards because it sandboxes storage to the app.

Any storage to common areas is controlled, and as of iOS 6 even more tightly controlled.

A storage card would only therefore work for common areas such as photos or music.

I can tell you from my recent experience that a lot of people don't understand file systems, If you want the masses to use a device then making them work out where the file is by directory is not a good move.

I have once experienced an issue with being short of space on a 16GB iPhone, and I was taking thousands of high res images using an app at the time.

Even then I could have worked with it.

Compare that to my previous phone which had removable storage where I never used the removable storage as the phone was much less useful.

I am quite glad I don't have removable card storage.

As for the ability to read storage cards, well that does work on an iOS device.

And I could have transferred files from my iPhone to another device when it got full with no issues.

Plus you can get storage devices to extend your iOS device if you want to.

So far from logical brain issues - as a software and sometime hardware designer and inventor I get it. if you don't then don't insult others for that,
I don't and never will have iTunes, are you going to send 200 emails?
Funny how Apple want to change the connector, agree to the MicroUSB, and still don't manage it

Samsung manage to output HDMI through the MicroUSB, so there's a LOT of data going through a smaller connector than the new Apple one

One thing they have done is made it reversable, apparently because iPhone owners can't work out "up" from "down" :P
Cause everyone knows you can't compare apples and oranges.

Assurance is a major thing when it comes to user data, hackers, malware, passwords.

Its a reason why Research in Motion is not even dead and is still standing as of today. Iphones are not even no way near as secured as RIM/BlackBerry devices. RIM devices are all known to pass Federal Government Security DoD clearances like FIPS-140-1, FIPS-140-2, which stands for (Federal Information Processing Standards) , CAPS etc.

RIM devices including the BlackBerry PlayBook that i'm typing this comment with have cryptography algorithms embedded into the secured kernel. Also the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is still the first and only commercial available tablet on the market to pass and get the FIPS-140-2 Certification. RIM BlackBerry devices have over 550 IT policies compare that to iOS which only has 50 IT policies. The micro kernel based on QNX Neutrino RTOS that powers the PlayBook tablet has a feature called "Integrity scan". Integrity scan, scans the PlayBook micro kernel for errors before the OS boots. The integrity scan also checks and detect any changes to the micro kernel like micro code, malware, damaged boot, damages to the kernel, hacking to the kernel etc. If the integrity scan detect any errors etc, then the PlayBook tablet will terminate the process and will not boot the device. Thats why BlackBerry has one of the most secured kernels. Plus the QNX kernel is idol from a protection layer from the drivers, file system, etc. When an application crashes or hangs the microkernel terminates the process and safely restarts the processes, drivers and applications without effecting the kernel. This means you would not have to restart you device if an app crashes, driver malfunction etc. All BlackBerry devices have a feature called Security Wipe. Security Wipe can be used to safely wipe all your personal data clean from the tablet and can be used for Anti-Password cracking. You only get 10 attemps to type in your right password but after the the 10 attemped the BlackBerry device wipes all the data clean. This is very useful if someone stolen your BlackBerry device and try to get your personal information.
Apple just don't seem to get how much they'll piss people off with this new proprietary connector. The fact that there are SO many add-ons out there with the 'standard' Apple connector had become a major selling point, now they've just nuked that. Yes they can sell adapters but they won't fit with everything. There was just no need not to stick with a standard micro USB. They are relying on the fact that most of their customers are rich enough and daft enough to buy everything again for the iPhone five.

Storage cards are only missing because they can increase their already obscene profits by charging many times the price of an SD card for a model with extra memory to people who don't even know whether they'll use it or not.

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion is well known when it comes to security thats why RIM owns QNX Software Systems. When it comes to top of the line assurance and reliability QNX kills every single operating system on the market. QNX is far superior than Android, iOS, WebOS, Windows phone, Windows, MacOS, Linux. QNX Neutrino RTOS uses a different architecture based on a true microkernel instead of a monolithic kernel or hybrid kernel which contains both monolithic and micokernel but doesn't have the same security and isolation architecture of a true pure microkernel. Thats why BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry PlayBook OS are based on the QNX Neutrino RTOS kernel because of the demand of federal government and military grade security and FIPS-140-2. No other OS on the market but QNX meets these certifications. QNX speaks for its self.

QNX is found running nuclear power plants, Blackberries, Cisco internet core routers, GPS, Cruise control, medical equipment, military equipment, aerospace defense equipment, power grids, automobiles, industrial robots and much much more.

QNX is so powerful that it used in space. QNX is known as military grade security and space grade security. QNX Neutrino is the only true pure microkernel on the market to be certified. Go to qnx dot com for my proof and facts. Click products tab and click the certifications link.

While the rest of the smartphone manufacturers are moving towards the MicroUSB connector, Apple is still with their proprietary junk. They claim it's 80% faster than the old connector. They could of instead used a MicroUSB 3.0 instead to get extra speed but they couldn't care less. They want all the suckers to spend $30+ on adapters and cables that cost them $1 to make in China. [I got my niece 2 USB cables for her iPod for under $5. They work as well as the Apple branded ripoff crap.]

What else is new
Quigster1 Updated - 13th Sep
I am still not impressed. My phone has a larger screen and all the features it has plus I can add more memery with an SD card. Samsung will be filing a lawsuit because of the LTE support I am sure since they threatened to do so. The adapter should be included with the phone but as is typical of Apple they are charging the outrageous price of $30. If it comes to T-Mobile I may check it out but until then who cares.
This is for me an interesting point. The Galaxy SIII screen size is nice.

The Galaxy phone size is not nice.

I want a much larger screen and I want the small phone. Most of the time the screen size is fine, sometimes I need more space though.

The small phone size is really convenient 99% of the time though.

Samsung lawsuit will be interesting over the 4G - the chipsuit manufacturers role in this is interesting, what licence is involved or not etc.

If Samsung has a case then I am all for them pursuing it.

The adaptor probably isn't necessary for most buyers. I don't have any docks for instance.

Why supply an adaptor to new buyers who don't have a dock?

Outrageous price of $30? Apple charges less than Samsung for similar adaptors such as HDMI.

Also on the HDMI front - I buy Apple HDMI cables (where appropriate) cause they cost a lot less than most, like $30 less.

What is more interesting to me is that the adaptor doesn't do analog audio or video, so I am wondering if there are docks that will not work with the adaptor. Anyone know?

Fair enough about T-Mobile if you don't want to buy outright.

I will buy based on plans available.

You can buy them at Radio Shack for $10. I have an ASUS Tablet that uses the micro HDMI. I used a standard cable that I already had and a $10 adapter, If I didn't already have the cable and just went with the standard HDMI to HDMI micro, the cable is around $13. what is your point?
And yet another tech writer shows himself to be an Apple shill. Keep drinking the kool-aid, Bill.

he did say that the phone itself is not what will draw people in, but the Apple ecosystem. I have to say I agree. Make it easy, and they will buy. I love Android, but I am a tech savvy user. Those who aren't tech savvy often find Android to be complicated and just not as intuitive.

I am a tech savvy user also - and have a lot of experience of most platforms (not much android yet tho)

From what I have seen of Android it brings back much of the bad stuff that Apple has improved in iOS.

Even though I can work almost anything, I really don't enjoy having to work with badly designed systems, I just can't be bothered any more.

I know things I would improve about iOS and the ecosystem though - and I can see where Apple is heading with some of those issues.

The thing is that my Sony-Ericsson phone was great as a phone, it even had an ecosystem in the end, with an app store. The ecosystem just wasn't together, the browser was useless, you can't do much with a small screen and buttons, the UI was hopeless comapred to iOS etc.

It's not having an ecosystem, it's having a usable system that can do things well.

As a software designer I see the sense in iOS and I see the lack of design sense in android so far.

Honestly, Im not Apple fanboy however your comment mentioned a very important point which is the OS itself. Although I use Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus running Android Gingerbread I think that it is the most amazing device ever as it does almost anything very smoothly and I tried some Apple products like iPhone and iPad but as a software engineer I still think that Android is still missing something or not mature enough comparing to iOS and WP7 as a solid OS. Although I hate to admit it but iOS as OS is somehow ahead of Android, but even though I would still prefer it for its flexibility in doing tasks much way easier for everyday use (in my own point of view) than iOS which you have to consult with iTunes with almost every single move you have to do.
Thank you for raising this point again. At the end our differences in choice are the market share for the companies.

Seriously? Android marketplace has more apps and other items than you even have time to browse. Many also provide cloud access. How is that different or better/worse than iTunes and iCloud? I don't think the ecosystem will provide squat. Complicated and not intuitive? How is that? My 7 year old daughter has no problem navigaing my old Moto Droid (I think it has Frodo on it) So if she can navigate that with no problem, why is it so difficult for anyone else, tech savy or not, to navigate ICS or jellybean? I don't get it.
I walked into an apple store for the first time last week. None of the devices had prices. There were about 30 apple employees walking around and about 15 customers. I kind of felt like I had wandered into a cult where prices and being concerned about money was taboo.

"....I don't get it."

Yeah... that's pretty obvious.
great, it is on the bottom, doesn't that interfere with docks?

It will. On the other hand, my Galaxy Nexus has it in the same place and while I don't use a dock, it is great for when I use it in the car (universal cradle, not a device-specific one) and plug it into the stereo AUX. Stays tidy that way.

I agree...it does make it easier to control the power cord and the headphone jack...mine is plugged into a cassette adapter (old radio hehehe). it is nice having that on the same side.

it won't interfere with the docks, because if you're using the dock then won't it be running your audio through the dock?

now stop and think for a minute why others went to the audio jack on the bottom years before, and Apple followed:
when you put your phone in your pocket, and you need to take it out to make a phone call, browse, whatever, will you take it out with your finger tips and "rotate" it so that it will remain with the headphone at the top, or will you grip the phone and just bring it out of your pocket?

It makes MUCH more ergonomic sense to put the connector on the bottom - or... just go Bluetooth :-P

They sued Samsung for being what every other smartphone is, in fact they sued in effect for being a competitor. Not only that, but they sought to actively discredit and extract the very devices that prove Samsung was first to market with the concepts that were unique.

What's more, there is nothing you can point to on the iPhone v1 that is unique to other devices. In fact, Samsung has more of a leg to stand on since the newer products - which feature things Apple objected to like icon types and rounded corners - are easy to see as a progression from devices that existed in Samsung's line before Apple came out with the iPhone.

All their products suck!
The people that buy Apple products are mindless dolts!
Just about any competitor's products just blows away the equivalent Apple product!
All of Apple's success comes from advertising!
iHate Apple..!!

Actually, I don't believe any of that, but I just wanted to fit in here on TR just once! I actually have several Apple products that I think are great, but you can't come here and say THAT, now can you?!? And yes, when I'm due for an upgrade I'll more than likely get the iPhone 5.
$100 for 16GB of flash memory. Remarkable...
