"I actually have several Apple products that I think are great...."

As in: $100 for 16gb flash memory is a reasonable price. I don't see a problem.

100 is reasonable? I just bought a 32gig for 39.99 at OfficeMaxx...how is that reasonable?
Why did Apple change the docking for the Iphone 5. As I understand you have to buy new stuff to connect your Iphone 5 They had a standard and they changed it. This is not good.

Where you were plugging your USB cable in you still do the same.

If you are using a device with a dock connector you might use the dock adaptor or adaptor cable.

If your docked device used analog signals on the dock connector then you can't connect.

If you were using any of the wireless connection methods then it only gets better.

For instance if you had a charger with USB socket, then no change.

If you plugged your iPhone into the USB on your car audio then no change.

If you have a car audio system with a dock connector you add the adaptor, as they are almost all (if not all) digital interface as far as I am aware.

If you have a clock radio with an iPhone/iPod dock then you may be able to use the adaptor, I am yet to confirm if any won't work.

Or you can just go on using your existing iPhone - it's not mandatory to change.
And a new, partly-disclosed processor and some fixes that should've been done on the iPhone 4.

It's about time Apple introduced a proper 802.11n that operates on both bands - this was a real issue on the 4S in our corporate environment, as the devices wouldn't connect if there weren't any uncontended channels and we'd have to restart the router, even though the additional channels on the 5GHz frequency were readily available.

Is this improved connector now the standard mini USB you get on Samsung, HTC, RIM, Motorola, etc. or have Apple just shrunk it to another awkward interface that you have to fork-out a further 40 just for a sodding charger?
Interesting that you had issues with the lack of dual band.

iPhone 5 has the dual band - watch the keynote or check the specs.

Connector is not mini-usb cause it's got other signals on it still.

Other end of cable is USB - so if your charger like most is USB at that end you're fine. Most I see have used USB to Dock cables, and I have always bought that type.

Apple's charger is of course USB to dock, and comes with the phone.

If you have a few chargers with fixed dock cables you could get an adaptor.

I really recommend standardising on USB at the power source end, as that is pretty much universally achievable across everything, even power outlets.

Every mention of this topic brings me back to Mom's Robots in Futurama and the episode about the eye-pods.

Sorry, but the whole idea of i-anything is pretty much ruined for me, now that I've seen a thousand years into the future....

Drive all the iPhone users to other platforms.
They have to buy all new stuff to go with their iPhone because of the connector changed. Try the Galaxy SIII (Awesome Phone) or the Lumia 920 (Wireless charging and a better screen) or the Samsung ATIVA S.
Ditch the Apple Tax! Apple just bent all their fans over with new 3rd party purchases and $100 for 16GB/32GB memory. That $300 phone is going to cost the average user much more. Think of all the Cars that have iPhone Docks!!! Now their iPhone won't dock!! Good Job Apple. I'm very happy to see that MS and Google aren't the only companies to screw their users.

From the point of view of an Apple customer, 4G/LTE is a killer feature, and about time.
One of the things I find significantly missing from the iPhone is a repeated missed call alert. Every other phone I have had would allow you to configure a reminder tone or vibrate every so many minutes until you recognized that you had missed a call. Does the iPhone 5 include this feature?

Otherwise, nice column, Bill!
You absolutely correctly point out that the new I-phone does NOT bring much new to the market

The NOKIA 920 on the other hand does !

Furthermore it runs on a Windows platform and is thus well sychronized with all the WINDOWS applications I use i my daily life ..like 85 % of all other computer users world wide
( also this does NOT apply to I-phone or Android based mobiles, just try to load Your recent holiday - photos from an Android mobile to Your windows based Stationary at home.. and You will understand what I mean : its a HAZZLE ! )

The new NOKIA 920 is a very attractive phone with a slew of innovative features
like Wireless( cordless ) charging and ofc G4 connectivity ..and an outstanding camera
plus an array of very usefull NOKIA Apps

And then it is designed with simplistic BEAUTY

Additionally NOKIA is reknown by all who have owned a NOKIA .. for its reliability ..over the long run ( my latest phone is a 5 year old NOKIA .. it still runs flawless ..despite intensive and rugged handling .. but now lacking some new technical advances )

in SUMMARY : ! most certainly KNOW that my next mobile will be a NOKIA LUMIA 920 !

How is it a hassle? copy/cut...paste...done...how is that difficult? You can either do it via one of the many apps available for file transfers either via USB, bluetooth, or as a network transfer over WiFi or 3G/4G, or attach your phone as an external storage device and copy it out of your DCIM directory. Why is that difficult?
You stated, "the iPhone 5 doesnt have a killer feature that makes it THE smartphone to have at least not from a hardware perspective. The screen is bigger. But, the screens on Android devices have grown steadily over the past several years as well." So what's the killer feature it's missing? That the screen is still smaller then some Android models? Is that it? I guess I don't see that as a deal breaker. While I'm content with my 4S, I'm in suspense as to what the missing "killer feature" is especially if it's marginally smaller then an Android. Bigger isn't always better and the current sizing is adequate for most. If that's it, it's a little nit picky.
You say that the iPhone 5 "...iPhone 5 lacks killer feature..." and that it "...still impresses..." I can tell you the OS has one feature that _no_ android device can stand by: consistency of user interfaces across all iOS devices.

Case in point: Configuring an Android device to access email varies from version to version, and event from brand to brand of device upon which the phone is built. This, IMHO, is largely Google's fault, for being too lenient in letting some variations go amongst the different manufacturers developing devices using Android in exchange for gaining market share not only against Apple, but also Microsoft with its Windows Mobile implementations. Accuse apple of being locked down, but at least their UIs across all their devices possess a controlled, consistent look and feel. That's just one thing that makes using Apple devices attractive.

Contrary to the author's opinion, Apple doesn't need to have that "standout feature" in neon lights. All they need is to offer simplicity and consistency in the way their devices are used across the board. That says a lot.
"All they need is to offer simplicity and consistency in the way their devices are used across the board." - Well they've just screwed that up with the new connector haven't they?
Display - 4 inch. That is what Android and Windows Phone call "entry level" phones.
Display Resolution - 1136x640 326ppi. That is poor compared to the Lumia 920 which has 1280x768, 332 ppi

LTE - Nothing new, Most Androids and Windows Phones have it over a year now.

Longer Battery Life-We will see. The 4S was supposed to be better on battery life and flopped.

The Lumia 920 will be my next phone. It has wireless charging, nfc, and a bigger screen!

HWat kinda crack is this writer smoking. The screen is still too small. The headphone jack on bottom is annoying and bad idea. The new charger port is just a way to scam more money from apple buyers.Yeah lte they are almost caught up to other makers now.. Only $599 without contract are you serious???No micro sd slot....ok more raping..So not a single thing that is realy worth bothering to make you buy this. The phone is still so far behind other makers phones and priced twice as much for only a third of the abilities.I mean how dumb would you have to be to bother with this boring lack luster overpriced iphone 4 update????

I believe the new Iphone 5 will not be as popular as the Iphone 4 or the Iphone 4s was because both of those phones had new, exciting new features. The Iphone 4 had the new front camera and the new design and the Iphone 4s had Siri. Both of those were exciting and made people want to upgrade, but the Iphone 5 doesn't have anything very exciting to it other than exterior things which still aren't mind blowing. I also think people will not like the earphone jack being at the bottom of the phone because then you can't set it down evenly if you are working out.

Whoa there Detwiler, you are writing htis and you haven't had your hands on the phone yet? You basically are becoming an iSheepeople, the specs are from Apple and you are relaying them...all available on the apple site, slow day for you i guess. In any event, there is not one thing on this device which is not already in the market and some for a considerable amount of time. As to the "Lightning" connector it is nothing more (not faster) than a common connection, only difference, it only fits an apple and you have to buy a 30$ adapter to make your other apple accessories work...some of them..not all will be compatible...many aren't buying the gravy train like before but you seem to have jumped on the wagon!

Bill is wrong, it does have a killer feature - it is the replacement maps app. One look at this should kill any desire to upgrade to iPhone 5!!!
Features of iPhone 5 are very good except its camera. I heard news that some iPhone 5 cameras are very bad and have purple flare when we capture image or recording video in sunlight. But there is a solution for that at http://howmobile.net/apple-iphone/2853-solution-camera-issues-iphone.html. If you have same kind of problem in your iphone device then must see these solutions. Hope you would like the solution. As its very easy to understand & implement. Hope the solutions work for your Iphone 5 camera trouble.
Thanks..

QNX
eman08 12th Oct
When it comes to top of the line assurance and reliability QNX kills every single operating system on the market. QNX is far superior than Android, iOS, WebOS, Windows phone, Windows, MacOS, Linux. QNX Neutrino RTOS uses a different architecture based on a true microkernel instead of a monolithic kernel or hybrid kernel which contains both monolithic and micokernel but doesn't have the same security and isolation architecture of a true pure microkernel. Thats why BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry PlayBook OS are based on the QNX Neutrino RTOS kernel because of the demand of federal government and military grade security and FIPS-140-2. No other OS on the market but QNX meets these certifications. QNX speaks for its self. Go to QNX dot com and see for yourself for my proof and facts.

QNX is found running nuclear power plants, Blackberries, Cisco internet core routers, GPS, Cruise control, medical equipment, military equipment, aerospace defense equipment, power grids, automobiles, industrial robots and
