I think KDE has some dependency on Marble functionality, that's why you can't easily get rid of this application in many KDE-based distributions.
On the other hand, this is really useful tool when you talk about education, like Edubuntu or OpenSuSE Li-f-e.

Hi,
Actually it's the distributor's responsibility to decide whether KDE should be built with Marble or not. Most distributors decide in favor of that dependency which isn't a problem most of the time.
That being said Marble can even be compiled so that it doesn't require KDE. The only dependency of Marble in that particular case is Qt. The latter is used for the Marble port to Windows, Mac OS X and our Mobile version of Marble which is called Marble Touch.

Thanks Marco for this extremely well-researched article about Marble! As a Marble developer I'd still like to add two minor things:
- A quick description on how to add user-maps is available here: http://userbase.kde.org/Marble/WizardMap
- The reason for the good speed has nothing to do with the amount of detail that is shown. Actually the speed stays very much the same if you browse maps like OpenStreetMap or Google Earth satellite imagery. We rather care about speed because the very same source code used for the desktop version of Marble also runs on mobile phones. And while the current version runs via software-rendering we even have an OpenGL view in the works which will provide optimal performance where OpenGL is properly supported.
