If you got that much out of your pairing I would say
that you weren't viewed as a drag. In fact I'd say that you needed to get a bit more out of it and take as much enjoyment out of bringing on the young and capable as he did. If he had felt as you do, he would have been as effective at it as you would seem to be. To be effective at training you have to want to do it.

Sitting by Nellie is not pair programming, if you aren't both contributing and making use of each other's ideas and approaches, it's not a pair.
