My problem is that when I open my old template, it shows the merged letters. I want to see the fields
You need to right click & select open. [alt]+[f9] does the field on/off.

thanks the alt + f9 did the trick
I cannot get {IF} commands to work with merge codes in Word 2010. Worked perfectly fine in earlier version. I have tried ways of writing the merge field and it doesn't work. Ordinary mail merge fields work OK.

Thanks

Not sure if we had the same problem. Are you using data from the old version? I had problems and had to save the data in new excel version then merge.

Thanks - data is an non "MS Office" source. I had a bright idea to copy and paste the normal merge fields (which were working) into my {IF} statements - result was a mix of the merge content and the merge code. bizarre! Good to hear alt-f9 was the trick you needed.
