The BIOS password CAN be reset
if you're willing to shell out the cost of a new mainboard...

IBM's "Enhanced System Security" in the PC300/350 series worked pretty much the same way: the BIOS password was saved to flash memory on the BIOS chip itself. If you forgot it, you were hosed; the only fix was a new mainboard because IBM wouldn't sell you the BIOS chip separately.
