Is this app now also 'standalone'? There's code that indicates it's a plugin for Joomla (matter of fact, I do have it installed in a Joomla 2.x).
Thanks for the posting, however, those 'catch 22's' you've mentioned will save some time in exploring the use of this tool when in conjunction with other apps ... like Moodle 2 repositories.

I'm happy you found the post useful. Yes, eXtplorer is definitely usable standalone. The screenshot here are from just such an installation, no Joomla at all on that server, and as far as I am personally concerned, I have never used it or installed it as a Joomla plugin

I recommend you to take a look at this web file manager. You can set up your own file server for managing and sharing files through web browser. It's like DropBox but self-hosted so that you can keep all your confidential files on your own server. The web based UI looks and feels like Windows 7 Explorer. It offers features that are not possible with a FTP server such as zipping files, downloading multiple files and folders in single download etc. It's also easier to set up and administrate than a FTP server.
