Are you having trouble figuring out how do the little things in Windows 8? You know the things that should be obvious but aren't. Name a few and we can start compiling a list and figure them out together.
What do you have to do to do this in a program installation?

will this work for you?

Since Microsoft touts IE 10 Metro as a plug-in free browser, you may be out of luck but you can jump from IE 10 Metro to IE 10 Desktop from within IE 10 Metro.
From IE 10 Metro > pick the tools icon in the lower right corner and choose View IE on the desktop.
Then the time is right there in the taskbar.

I want to know how to add devices to the Charms bar. Like my printer or built in web-camera.
open Charms. Click on Devices. here you will find a list of devices currently connected to your computer - such as your printer.

I am just a lowly IT Director but I think as long as you install an exe and put it in c:\Program Files\, a tile will be automatically created and placed at the end of all of your previously created tiles. (Win 8 - not Win RT)
JJFitz, It isn't there. That is why I want to know how to add it. I thought the whole idea was that W8 would automagically see your devices and place them in the Charms bar, but not so. When I click on Devices, there are none there, even though I have a printer and a web-camera.
Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Add a device

When adding the printer, it might be helpful to know the IP address of the printer if it is networked.
Assuming that your webcam is not networked, you might need to go to the manufacturer's site and install the webcam software & drivers. Windows 8 drvers should be better but I have not had a problem using Windows 7 drivers for any webcam yet.

Good luck!
"Navigate over to the application you would like to create an app for."

I don't know which is worse, Microsofts clumsy new operating system or clumsy directions and sloppy use of lingo when trying to demystify it.
Thanks for your suggestion . It helped me in restoring my tiles back. Thanks once again.

All right clicking did was open the program
I felt much the same way at first. Upgrading from 7 to 8 did create tiles for many of the apps that I had been frequently using, but not for all. This process the author is describing is how you can access the others and make them available on the start screen. Very similar to putting an icon on the desktop for Spider Solitaire, for example.

You aren't really creating an app, just placing a tile in the forefront so it is more readily accessible. Quite clever and neat, because your less frequently used apps are all available in the All Apps area. Don't look for the games like Spider Solitaire there, however; you will need to install the legacy game from the Microsoft Store.

Once you pin the tile to the Start Screen, you can make it smaller and move it to fit in with your other apps. I tend to place games together, news apps together, etc.

While you are
And searching for 'putty.exe' returns 'No files match your search'? I know it's there; I just copied it into C:\Program Files (x86).
I got what I wanted by creating a shortcut in:

C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

I wouldn't say it sucks based on a lack of response to a question. If you'd said that the GUI sucks on a desktop, I'd probably agree with you. I'd definitely agree if you'd said it was pointless on a desktop.
I don't got a Windows 8 machine anymore, so I can't try it.

Front, like the first screen, or back, like the right click and pick all programs.
