Had nothing to do with you attempting to post links the site itself was down and only partially working.

Even if you where logged in before the site went down and when it came back up you had to log in again but the Log In Details where no longer available so you constantly got bounced. You where not the only one who experienced that everyone did.

how is it that other users can post links

but I can't post anything that even resembles a link
when I tried to post
the link to DFT
I got bounced out to "verify your account" and nothing was posted

when I changed the link to the garbage below the answer posted:

h t t p : / / w w w . h g s t . c o m / s u p p o r t / i n d e x - f i l e s / s i m p l e t e c h - l e g a c y - d o w n l o a d s # D F T

And the .Whatever and I don't have any problems posting.

The reason that you got the above is because a lot of Spammers hit the site hard like for instance last night I deleted 62 Posts from the one poster trying to sell crap.

So the Powers That Be decided to stop links particularly Tiny URLs and the like should result in the post not posting but may result in other messages depending if the site is undergoing maintenance or any other work at the time.

So I post the link like this

http://www.techrepublic .com/forum/questions/101-396430/windows-vista-not-showing-external-drive?tag=mantle_skin;content
remember to remove the space from between techrepublic and the .com for a working link.

I hope that is of some help.

so what I and others do most of the time is insert a space between say
www.somesite. com (note the space after the period in front of com),.
then include the instruction to remove the space before com and paste
the link into your browser. The problems with links are a side-effect of
attempting to deal with the spammers, and as a result we semi-regular
members got caught in the crossfire.
I've never had a problem posting links, but do sometimes use the space process just to be on the safe side. Also, there are some domains that are often used by spammers and I believe the system is set to delete all links to those domains.

Sure way to post a link is to make it a non working link and leave a space before the dot at the .com point.

The real secret is...

I used to leave off the "http://" and just post "www.techrepublic.com/forum/discussions/102-396754". That resulted in a live link until the last site update took away that capability.

Your best bet is Colin's suggestion of adding the space between the domain name and the top level domain.
But many others do not.
For some reason TR blocks likes to Microsoft or MSDN

Seems you can only post links that stay within this site.

that spammers can post working links
(sometimes pages of 'em)

but legitimate users can't add one link to a legitimate site

the whole business of
add a space to post

delete the space to make it work
is just a tad annoying

and the fun I had yesterday after making the 2 posts with the fried link
I got bounced out to can't access the site
- pages wouldn't load
and
- attempts to log in again
only got me a blank page with some long cryptic error code

can't TR just disable the link parser?
so that links aren't posted as links
but rather are just posted as regular text
