Big data has been around since we have been able to create digital information. The only difference is that storage is getting chealer and faster and companies are finally startting to ask the right questions. BI has always been, and always will be about asking the right questions and getting the corporate silos to undertand that they can ask these questions and get meaningful answers has been a long time coming. If you look at the top performing fortune 1000 compaines they have IT/IS representation on the board becase they figured out long ago that IT/IS, sales, operations, and BI are and must be a synergistic relationship. No more silos.
