Navy has used roto-drones; this is the first cat-launched drone airplane
Although it has had fits and starts, the Navy is still developing a new helicopter drone that can carry weapons. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_Scout) What makes the X-47B unique is that it is the first UCAV big enough to have to launch from a carrier deck catapult and land use the arresting cables like a normal naval aircraft. Rather than a scout drone that happens to have weapons bolted on, the X-47 is being designed as an attack aircraft that doesn't happen to have a cockpit in it.
