http://www.techrepublic.com/forum/discussions/102-398065-3748008

I never heard anybody complain about the new Start button when it was introduced because it's an ADDED feature, you don't HAVE to use it. They did not take away the option of opening My Computer, finding your program there, and launching it that way. Go ahead Microsoft, ADD any feature you want to Windows, just don't take away core features of Windows without simple setting put in place to bring them back to how WE want OUR computers?!?I typically use either a large (huge compared to 1990's standards) high resolution monitor or multiple monitors. This allows me to use "windows" to do multiple things such as watch a movie in a window while monitoring something else in another window. Being forced to cover my video with a full-screen "start screen" when simply trying to open another program is not "progress". My irritation at that is not simply resistance to change, it is resistance to unnecessarily annoying design flaws. I use both tablets and PCs. I'm happy if I can just "pick up" my "PC" and it converts to a tablet. But I do not wish to be forced to leave the "PC Paradigm". Until we reach a future where computers can read our thoughts through some new technology I will still want the choice to use a mouse and keyboard EFFECTIVELY and not have to awkwardly maneuver my way around a tablet-centric interface. I swear, every time people have legitimate complaints about things like this they get attacked by hoards of people who SEEM to be corporate shills calling them "Luddites" or something similar. Not having the OPTION to have the Start button sucks, plain and simple. There is no worthy reason to defend not having the OPTION and attack the many people who are upset about not having the choice. When opening a .PDF file in Internet explorer you are also ungraciously forced into full screen mode and left with no clear "Exit"?!? No clear method of leaving full screen? That is a serious WTF moment, Microsoft. Maybe there are commands to do both of those things, but the fact that a Microsoft Certified Professional with over 20 years of IT experience could not figure out an easy way (with one click or one key press) to do that speaks volumes as to poor design decisions.

I followed your instructions and made an icon that works great with no problems! It was helpful to learn about the CLSID concept and using the Documents directory. I'm already thinking of other ways to use these tools! The only thing I would add is that it's easier to select the text from your article and copy-and-paste it into the shortcut than typing it in. And you can avoid fat finger mistakes that way. Also, instead of pinning it to the taskbar, I dragged-and-dropped the new shortcut into one of my preexisting toolbars. That's just a personal preference. As for all the whining about how Windows 8 isn't exactly like Windows 7, I remember when Windows first started and people were crying, "I'll never use a mouse!! If I want to execute a command, I'll type it in." We've come a long way since then and I'm sure there will be plenty of changes ahead as well. My philosophy is, "Suck it up and learn it or do it with the old system, but don't rain on our parade."

I have used every Windows version since conception. Each had benefits and problems. Windows 3.x truly had the best human interface for a user that has many different programs and demands icons over program names to manage access. The Windows 3.x's ability to create sub-windows on the desktop to manage applications related by type was an invaluable option. Had this concept been incorporated in Windows 8, The metro interface would then be meaningful. It would provide an uncluttered start screen and the ability to group tiles (Icons) so as to be useful. This would provide easy access by both the tablet user and the desktop user. A win-win situation.Windows 8 as it stands will not be useful to professional desktop users unless the missing start menu is replaced. Once the start menu and the metro interface are made optional, Windows 8 will be a perfectly usable OS for the desktop user.

Now, some others have given page links that they appear to have from past hot links, they may or may not be valid sales via the MS store in THEIR country, but I can't get them to work right from here.MS is SUPPOSED to be a professional IT company, and having faulty store info is NOT the actions of a professional company. On top of that, MS has applied pressure to stop the supply of new systems with Win 7 to physical retail outlets in many countries. Yes, some of the vendor on-line stores will still sell some models with Win 7, but they won't sell them via the retail shops only to on-line customers. Many people do not like buying on-line for many reasons, a big one being the inability to properly check the product out before buying.

I can't believe this Deadly Earnest guy, creating more "heat" than "light." CLEARLY..... Win7 is available for sale, from multiple weblinks. And all of them appear to be from the official microsoftstore.com website, as many respondents have already pointed out, to no avail. The earth is still turning, the sky has not fallen, and Win7 has not disappeared. Yet this guy just goes on and on, harping on about how you cannot buy this stuff that's obviously for sale, regardless of whether it was bought through "basic front door access" (whatever that means -- a jumble of words that can mean anything to anyone). AGAIN... for those a little slow or hard of hearing.... search by the method that JJFitz helpfully recommended (above).Q. "Are you suggesting Microsoft are NOT showing everything for sale in their Store in the proper Store pages?" A. Yes. Obviously Microsoft, like most corporations, has one hand not knowing what the other hand is doing. And does not cross-list every Win7 link on every page (nor should they, when Win8 is the main promotion). As JJFitz said, end of discussion.

violate any laws with moving to the cloud. I know that under the laws in New South Wales Australia is would not be legal for ANY company to move ALL their data to the cloud as it would violate the security requirements of the various Privacy Laws. In some industries it would violate other laws.Setting up and maintaining a system with Zorin is actually easier than doing it with Windows. Although Zorin is based on Ubuntu, I don't like the current Ubuntu interface, which is why I switched to Zorin as it gives me a choice of interfaces, unlike MS Windows. I also like to use Libre Office, especially for older people, as it's so like the more traditional version of Office they know instead of the ribbons.Libre Office does come in a Windows version if you feel you have to stay with the MS Windows. The main reason I have a lot of the older people switching to Zorin and Libre Office is I can set it up to look like what they're familiar with, and I know it will have less issues with malware and spyware due to the built in security. One person used to have me clean their Windows XP system every four to five months due to spyware and malware picked up while they surfed - fast Finger Freddy syndrome by the user. They have an issue with remembering passwords, so all the passwords for their websites are stored in Fire Fox and they don't remember the system one, and have to look it up if needed. I've trained them to ignore requests for the system password whilst browsing. It's amazing how often they get that request, but haven't had any spyware or malware for seven months now. There are a few clients where I recommend they stay with Windows as they have little choice due to some mission critical software that's Windows only - but they will have a major issue in a few years as it only runs on XP and doesn't work well in Win 7 XP mode. As they need to replace hardware I expect them to have major issues and look at replacing that software.

My suggestion that a Zorin implementation might not be good for clients stems from my own situation. I'm basically a retired Data-Center, Desktop, Database manager for a very large company, who now supports a handful of small businesses, mostly for fun and to provide enough pocket change to support my tech habit. In my case, I'm keenly aware of the need for continuity for my clients, for when/if I decide to pull out of the game, altogether. Thus, I am not prone to leading clients down a non-mainstream path. Instead, I steer them down a path of simplifying their Microsoft environments by removing unnecessary servers and/or services (especially Exchange) and moving them to a cloud environment instead (e.g. Office 365). Note: They are all very small businesses, of 10 users or less.I admit I have no experience with Zorin, and little experience with Linux, other than the Ubuntu Server I am running at home. Mea culpa...

a "start SCREEN" in windows before this because there never was a need for it since there is a prominent START BUTTON. The only reason you would want to do something this way would be if you have a small device where menus don't show up very well, but on MY PHONE there are menus, and they work quite well, without using a touchscreen, even, so that disproves that this interface is for smaller devices, either. Touch screens are the way someone had to put UN-neccesary CHEAP equipment that will BREAK together and charge more for it, rather than using durable buttons, which makes sense, and you don't have to continually WIPE OFF to see what you're trying to view, and costs less to build.Quite simply, I don't need Windows 7, either, don't like how it works, nor the horrible UI changes they made to it. I have XP, and even IT doesn't work properly like Windows 2000 did. I have my XP set to Classic, and it still doesn't work properly, like it should. I had to DO A WORKaround to put picture backgrounds in my folders for instance... They took too much out, and put in too much garbage no one needs, as they do with every version. They should have quit while they were ahead with Windows 2000, and let the innovation occur on Linux, where at least it's FREE and you can do things HOWEVER you want. Old versions work and you're not FORCED to get a new version if you don't want to, simply because you bought new hardware. Typically I USED TO run whatever came on the machine, and would NOT update, as that always caused problems. Updates from Microsoft that would cause a machine never to reboot again, caused this phobia, and they haven't gotten much better with it from what I can see. NOW I simply want to buy hardware, and not have some particular OS shoved on there by the manufacturer. APPLE could listen to this as well, they should get rid of their proprietary software and allow people to choose, at first startup, whether they want Linux, Windows (pick a version) or Mac. There is no reason to bundle software with a machine, other than a small device that needs it to say, connect to a cel network, to talk on. (And there is NO reason I want to use my phone browse the internet, unless my modem hooks it to my COMPUTER to do so.

That way you can resize multiple windows to fit on one screen. Also, why would you want a menu to take up the whole screen and obscure open programs, when you could simply have cascading menus operating off of a simple button, such as .. whoa, what a concept.. a START button? Also, I object to EVER using the Windows key, it's too easy to hit accidentally while typing, interrupting what you're doing. Making it NOW OBSCURE THE ENTIRE screen makes me want to RIP IT OFF the keyboard even more than I ever have before (and I've ripped them off of multiple keyboards, believe me.)

Is run on most internet hosting companies computers, it's run at IBM, and other large companies. 8 of ten servers runs Linux. It's just the sheep are convinced that ms Windows is the "only game in town" for business desktops because it's all they've ever seen at home, except Apple, which isn't very strong in business AT ALL.With Microsoft's now introducing an App store likke Apple (basically) where you have to pay for each and every component, it simply doesn't make sense to use them anymore, when free alternatives are sufficient. They're in it for the money, not for the vision of the future. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise, they have NEVER had their customers needs in mind, just the almighty dollar.Time to stop the madness.
