Note how these certifications are now quickly aligning with the Cloud. Some think the Cloud is "cool." With organizations moving to the Cloud, they are eyeing big cost savings in staff size reductions and being freed up from costs associated with Data Center equipment refreshes and software refreshes. Translation: Massive layoffs ahead for those who refuse to quickly adapt and revamp their skills. Note: Your employer isn't using computers that are five to six years old, so why do they want IT staff without current certifications. The best advice I could give young people starting out is:1) Embrace the Cloud.2) Learn everything you can about cybersecurity3) Learn everything you can about good project management and leadership skillsBy the way, June 1993 will be the 20th anniversary of my first MCP certification.Best regards,BillWilliam Favre Slater, III MBA, M.S., PMP, CISSP, SSCP, CISA, ISO 27002, ISO 20000, ITIL v3, IP v6, Cloud Computing FoundationProject Manager / Program Managerslater@billslater.comChicago, ILUnited States of AmericaProverbs 22:1http://billslater.com/careerhttp://billslater.com/certificationshttp://billslater.com/interviewhttp://billslater.com/writing

In my opinion Cisco has always been one of the front liners in IT and their network certifications are proven career builders.
I'm ashamed to say that I've not known about that stack until about a month ago. To know and not to do is really not to know. Too often we're too brainwashed into thinking that paying high fees for: A. Software B. Educationis normal.I'm now a believer. Most people just don't really know about LAMP because it's methodologies are counter-intuitive. What they know even less about is the fact LAMP does run 60% of the internet(Facebook, Google, Gmail, big big sites with massive traffic), is free to own, easy to learn (if you're willing to learn), and has a massive community at the back of it (the best hackers and businesses included), and can ultimatelyly deliver any content you throw at it from a central server in your living room (could be your PS3!) or across the globe (some VM in the cloud). It's not too late to hop on the SaaS bandwagon, if not for your employer, then for yourself. The options are vast... and their cheap!Let's not assume because the news is old it is no longer newsworthy. Ask me. I was ignorant (in my defence I was a teenager) 10 years ago. So here's the truth: LAMP is a viable option for (almost) anyone who needs to use a computer, instead of whatever you're using Windows or Apple for today. It's stable, it's elegent and it works. A 6 year old (no kidding) can use it. There's no reason (very few) why you should not be using it, learning it, distibuting it.

I think you need a little bit of everything to become a successful IT Professional. Went to college got my degree in IT with no experience, started in Help Desk, gained some valuable experience, moved up the chain and EARNED certs on the way up. Now I have my Bachelor's in IT, CISSP, MCSE Sec + with 10 years experience.Lastly the most critical thing to make yourself unique upon common IT folk is to learn to be business saavy and not be a douche bag to the people you serve and not like you're Mr. Know it all. So many times ive met smart people by a$$holes to people because they think they know more than them. So what. Education, Certs Experience will get you far but add a bit of personality and humbleness will get you farther with it. I can teach anyone what i do given time, but i can never change their attitude.Overall be a well rounded experienced, educated, certified PROFESSIONAL.Now I own firm and I am also working for a company as a Sr. consultant at the same time, loving my career of helping people and organizations.

Fixed it for you.. had a few extra words in there. Actually it's a legal obligation that profit corporations maximize share holder earnings at the cost of customer and staff benefit. Plus you get it twice as hard because IT is only ever seen as a begrudging expense to be minimized unless you happen to be a tech industry company. The dark secret of IT work; you will be expected to know everything about anything that is, connects to or points at a computer and you'll need to keep up to date with the latest technologies outside of work hours at your own expense. (though I'd love see companies with It staff development programs the way they develop staff in other departments).

You'll probably want to be looking at the next level of certs above CEH to specialize towards a specific position within a pentest team.Think the EC's Security Analyst for me next (to read the content at minimum).. maybe network threat testing or network perimeter testing.. we'll see. Makes for good reading content at least (I hear normal people watch sports and stuff).Anyone out there have stats or info on the demand for EC Council's certs?
