Prior to Hurricane Hugo in '89, I removed a couple of 6" tree limbs that were too close to the house. I removed one at the trunk, but because of the length of my ladder, I left about two feet of the second. What the heck, it was a good four feet from the house.

The only significant damage we had was where the 120+ mph winds repeatedly beat that 6" stub into the roof. At least it wasn't the entire limb.
