I'd rather stab myself in the eye with a fork than write/use SOAP services
REST services are particularly easy to write and debug, especially if you have tools built for JAX-RS and either JDO or JPA.

SOAP services are great, right up until you try to use them from a non-Java client. Then you realize how much of a huge pain they are.
