Gnome Shell just doesn't live up to it's name
I'm disappointed by Gnome Shell because it just feels like it's missing the mark. I would prefer if they focused on the core functionality - the javascript engine - and allowed projects to define their own desktops i.e. from your display manager, you should be able to make options.
That would mean that other projects could sit on top - Unity could be made in Gnome Shell without relying on Compiz. You could also offer a traditional desktop with menus and the type or, heaven forbid, a Mac OSX type arrangement. It would give people options while consolidating development towards a solid base and stability....
