Is there an easy way to access your data whilst "on the road"? i.e. from smartphone, tablet?

Don't know about availability on phones or tablets, but there is a version available on portableapps.com. You can install the PortableApps.com platform and the app or just the solo portable app on a USB thumb drive or cloud drive and then insert the thumb drive into (or access the cloud from) any windows computer (or Linux WINE) and execute the portable app. The PortableApps.com format carries the data files and the portable app in the same directory.
The whole PortableApps.com ecosystem is really sweet. There are currently over 300 open source and freeware apps available and regularly updated, and updates can be automatically downloaded and installed.
