New lines and border thickness
If you want to add a new line of cells to a table, click just to the right of the rightmost part of the table, then hit the "Enter" key. You'll add another line of open cells below the line at which you did this, and the cell and character formats will be the same. This is quicker than the method Microsoft gives you. If you wish to make thicker lines, such as border lines, the "Format Borders and Shading" dialog is useful, but, to make your changes stick, make them, change them back to what they were, then make your changes again. This is due to a minor bug in the software, present in Word 97 through Word 2003. (I haven't ascertained whether this is the same in Word 2007 or Word 2010.)
